Plain Jane M&P turns me on
Found this old NIB M&P today hiding in the dust of an old gun shop. SN S901922
It seems like it's from around 1946 or 1947, but it has a one line address and "S" serial number guns should have a four line address.
It's a 5" barrel, square butt in correct Gold Box. 5 Screw, numbered diamond stocks and no sign of a lanyard pin.
I THINK it's a long throw hammer.
I paid $475 for this gun. SCSW lists LNIB @ $500, with a 25% premium for an "S" serial number.
Anyone care to comment or tell me anything about this gun?
I wasn't looking for another M&P, but it was so perfect I couldn't let it pass.
I won't ask if I SHOULD have bought it.... isn't the answer always YES??? *S*
Bill

Bill,
Nice find ! That's a very good looking M&P even without the box! Looks like a "long throw".
I think Lee Barner has a few of these early late war M&P's, maybe he'll chime in here.

linda, you are correct. i only have about a dozen now and three of them are the 5" variant. two are unfired and one of them is an SV prefix gun with box, docs, & cleaning tools. the other is an early 50s C series and is one of my favorite shooters. about 70% finish and smooth as silk action. i believe bill will enjoy this one. thanks for sharing. let us know how it performs. lee

No box, about 95% with wrong grips.Has the right ones now!
I thought it was a prize then and still do.Love that smooth, long throw!

depicts - there is "Natural Beauty" to plain Jane!
My wife is fond of pretty M&P's also. This is her early 50's "C" prefix, original Nickel gun. It had less than a box through it before she bought it.

Beautiful early, post-war, M&P! I now have a 2", 4", and the 5" version shown below. They all have very smooth actions - even though 2 are the newer, short action guns - and shoot POA at 30' with 158 grain ammo. They are slowly becoming favorites in my range bag. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Wow, nice info. Keep it coming friends.
I hadn't thought about shooting the gun. It's so pristine I just "had to have it". *S*

Man, those are some beautiful K frames. I find them but they are $700-800.00 One day I will find one at a reasonable price.

Nice to see so many M&P fans
I've been known to tuck a few of these plain ole models away. Not sure S&W would still be in business without 'em.

Very nice Bill! I would have bought it at that price without a second thought! Y'all have some beautiful M&Ps! Thanks Duster, for the pic of the 2". I have a box for one, but haven't seen any of the 2" guns around to put in it! Now I know they do exist!

Here's a "set" in all barrel lengths.
All are "S" serial numbered, long action, and have a one-line address.

Love M&P revolvers! Square butt from the mid twenties and a round butt from the late "teens." Retread photos but want to keep this thread humming along. Love to see everyone's M&Ps too.

Nice guns folks. Some of you have a nice selection of these "plain Jane" guns. They are simple and beautiful.
After this nice reaction to my purchase, I may go back to this hidden gunshop and pick up the Mod 19-3, at least 95% with Box and docs, he has sitting there for less than $500

Folks, your M&Ps are all beauties. I don't have one yet, but I have it as an article of faith that every self-respecting Smith collector needs at least one. Once I get over my current focus on mid-century/prewar .22s I'll probably start looking for the newest looking late '30s or immediately postwar M&P I can find. Love those long-throw actions.

Here's a pic of the other side, I can't remember exactly what I paid but it was under $500, some may say it's too much but I couldnt resist on a gun this old in this kind of shape.

Gunnut44, your gun is gorgeous. You can't beat the finish on the pre-war guns. I love the satin blue on my 1947 model, but the blue on yours looks deep enough to swim in. Congrats.

Thats a fine looking revolver! The S&W K-frame service guns will turn my head every time! I have two reblued, one four inch just prewar and a five inch about 1954 vintage. Found a really nice 1905 4th target vintage 1927. They are all fine shooters. Thanks for shareing!

Depicts, Thanks for the kind words, you are right the finish on those old guns are just beautiful and so deep. I found this gun at a big gun store that has a ton of new guns and very few used it was mixed in with the new S&W's and at first glance I thought it was one of the new "vintage" models and once I saw it was a five screw I had to buy it! Too bad it didn't have the box! I have six mod 10's mostly -5 and one -6 and this one is the best looking for fit and finish, too bad the pride and craftsmanship is not put into the things we buy today.

Beautiful guns!
I would much rather have an old but excellent S&W than just about any other gun. When I look at the prices of new guns, it truly reflects how undervalued these beauties usually are.
Thanks for sharing.

hsguy that is a beauty! I would buy those all day long in that condition, what a great find and the box is a double bonus! It goes to show that there are many mint guns out there to be found, many of them probally have been sitting in a dresser drawer for the last few decades.

John, that gun is just beautiful.
It's just amazing to me that after all these years, like new guns turn up again and again. Sometimes for reasonable prices. Doesn't it just beg to be shot? Nah, it's too beautiful for that.

I just wanted to tell all of you how great all of your six shooters look. K frames and the .38 special cartridge are dear to my heart. If you are looking for a gun to defend house and home they can't be beat in any configuration.

This one is C 338325. I figure that was 1953 to 1955? It was a police gun.
