Default K-22 Pre-Model 17 Masterpiece or Pre-Model 18 Combat Masterpiece?

I recently saw two early production K-22's, one numbering to 1947 and the other to 1949. Both had 4" tapered barrels with pinned Partridge front sights. The 1949 had matching numbers on the butt, yoke, cylinder, extractor star, barrel, and grips, which matches what "the book" says about the pre-17. However, according to the book the pre-17 was only produced with 6" barrel. And, or course, the 4" pre-18 had the Baughman front sight. The 1947 had matching numbers also except for the grips, which had been replaced. It also had the one line "Made in the USA" above the trigger guard instead of the four line address.

Since according to the book the pre-18 production began in 1949, I feel pretty sure that the 1947 is a pre-17. So was the barrel cut, or were some produced in 4" barrel? As for the 1949, everything about it says pre-17 except the barrel length. Again, factory 4" or cut barrel? Or pre-18 with a different sight?

I would appreciate any and all information anyone could provide.

from what i have seen, the pre model 17 is a 6" and the pre model 18 is a 4". it sounds like the 17 may have been cut down. post pictures and serial numbers for each gun, that way some of the k frame experts will be more help. post pics anyway would love to see them...

Were they like this?

The K-22 Target & Combat Masterpiece

I wouldn’t get hung up trying to label them. They’re K-22’s with 4" barrels and Patridge front sights and that's a cool combo. Odd that you saw two together.
Were they done right, how much, why didn’t you buy them??????

Yep, they look just like the 4" in the post. I don't really care which model they are, just more curious than anything. Looks like there was a transition period in the late 1940's where the 17's had the tapered barrel like the 18's. Both of these were on an auction site, so I couldn't examine the barrels. Anyway, as you said, the 4" barrel with the partridge sight is a cool set up.

There were 4" and 6" pre 17's, and if I remember correctly, that led to the M18 coming into being as the 4" version of the K-22, which matched up with the K-38's, where the M14 was the 6" and the M15 the 4".

Default Hello

I keep getting a notice to make a post. Well here goes.
I'm VERY new to this thing with guns, please bear with me. I do have a question, looking for help. I am in the process of purchasing a S&W K-22 model 17. This gun is in great shape, it appears, and folks at the range I now belong to say (ALL) that the person selling this gun takes very good care of his guns. This one looks it. Question, I have fired it, appears fine BUT after firing it the extractor works EXTREMELY hard, ejecting the shells. With out cartridges it works smooth. Comments please.

Bill T.

P.S. am I doing this correctly?

technically posting a seperate question in someone else's thread is called thread jacking but I don't think the OP (original poster) will care.

If extraction is difficult, it is a result of the ammo used not the revolver, most of the time. If you were to own it, you can try different ammo until you find one that ejects easy, for me, the Federal Bulk stuff at Wally World works great.

Bill, welcome to the forum.

Kurac is right about K-22s showing sensitivity to some brands of ammunition.

But it remains possible that you have one chamber or two that are draggy by themselves. What you might want to try is to fire one round at a time in successive chambers with a particular brand of ammunition and see if you get ejection resistance in all chambers or just one or two. Then polishing those chambers may solve the problem for you with any brand.

Or maybe not, but it might be an interesting experiment. So far I have been lucky with mine, which probably means I have just not yet shot something it dislikes. I've used Aguila subsonic LR and Winchester SuperX. Both shoot accurately and extract just fine.

PMRet:

They sound like "transition guns," and anything is possible with "transition guns." I would not buy either gun without first inspecting it and feeling that the configuration was likely factory original. Too many poorly "cut" guns out there.

Bill T.:

+1 on trying a variety of ammunition.

.22 Long Rifle ammunition...especially the cheap, bulk stuff...is notoriously dirty. As little as fifty or sixty rounds can seriously gum up your gun...which leads me to the other "solution:" thoroughly cleaning the gun...especially the cylinder charge holes and underneath the ejector star. Many shooters rarely/never clean the bores of their .22s. When it comes to revolvers, cleaning the bore may not be necessary (I am not going to argue the point because, like everything else, people feel very strongly about their position on the subject), but you should always clean the cylinder really, really well.

Thank you all.

My apologies to where they belong. Please help me to do this right. Should I start another thread, I guess you call it. I am going to continue here
hopefully without offending any one. I have since found out the gun store gave me the wrong ammo. They didn't have what I really could use and gave me, what they thought was a better grade/type etc. Unfortunately it was Match Rifle. Would this do it? Thanks in advance. Maybe one of you could tell me what I should have done in the beginning so as not to do the wrong thing again. Maybe in a PM, however that works. Thanks again.

Bill T.
