Default Model 19-4, LAPD Commerative

I have an unfired new in box S & W, 6," B/S, and will sell it soon as soon as I can figure out what it's worth. It is in a fancy wood box in new condition. What stumped me is the model, 19-4. I thought they just made a model 19. What does the 4 have to do with it?

They put numbers after them to show changes made to them. For example, around 1977 they moved the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder and that change was marked by a "-4". Around 1982 they eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder and marked it "-5".

You have a LAPD commemorative? It's not a City of LA 200th anniversary?

Curt, The dash 4 designation denotes the presence of an engineering change during the production run of the Model 19 that moved the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder. S&W uses a dash plus digit system after the Model number to show what changes are present in any partictular gun. Some of the dash numbers are very rare , creating a sub-collecting era for a model., such as the dash one marked guns. Ed.

I haven't seen one before. Would you mind posting pictures of it when you get a chance?

They made the City of LA's in 1981 and production was to be limited to 1981 units, but no one seems to know how many were made.

Amusing since LAPD never issued or used .357 mag ammo. It was the 'Special' only......and still is for the back ups/off duty. A commemorative M15 or 67 would ideal. But hey, if they sell.....

I've owned this Baby since the late 1980's. Commemoratives have never been in my area of interest. I Bought this one as a favor to the original purchaser. It would have value more value as a shooter. But I can't bring myself to shoot it.

6" barrel, shrouded ejector rod: good for 'whack a perp'!

I wonder why S&W didn't offer a Mod 14 as a commemorative. That would be a model they actually used.
