Default 5" Smith & Wesson Model 27 (4-screw) ~ 1959

This weekend I happened across a very nice (C&R) 4-screw Model 27 ("no-dash") that dates from 1959. It has an S-prefix serial number, and the harder-to-find 5" barrel. I hesitated a little before buying because the topstrap checkering looked a bit worn - turns out it was just dirty - probably from contact with holster leather.

The gun has Diamond Magna grips, numbered to the gun, and has a period-appropriate two-piece Gold Box (but marked for a nickel 5 inch), appropriate tools and wiper, and some paperwork that is a mixture of stuff from the 50's-70's. Mechanical condition and lockup is outstanding; finish has wear on some of the sharp edges, and on the bottom of the trigger guard (plus just a hint of muzzle wear) - looks like it was carried holstered for a short time, but the grips are in super condition as well (maybe replaced with Targets or Herretts/Ropers for a while) so they probably weren't carried on the gun.

The gun has a .500" target hammer and trigger, which I personally prefer. This gun won't be a safe queen -- but I'm not gonna shoot it loose, either. This one's a keeper for the next generation of gunnies.

--Neill

With my matching 5" 27-2:

"but I'm not gonna shoot it loose, either."

Pray tell, if you wanted to "shoot it loose", what sane loads would you use?

I meant that as a figure of speech -- meaning I'm not going to put this one away for good, but I'm also not gonna drag it to the range every week, either...

That is a great find with the box and all.
Your photographer skills are also excellent. I'm going to have to give up my 1958 Kodak Brownie.

A really nice old 5" N frame. And, by-the-way, your close-ups are killer!

Thanks for the post,

Jerry

Very nice find!!!

Are the target trigger and hammer original?

When did they start producing target hammers and triggers for the M 27?

Beginning with the registered magnum in 1938 the 5" N frame was the issue gun for the Mississippi Highway Patrol up until they were issued 686's for a short period before going to bottom feeders. They carried some equivalent of the model 27 for over 50 years. The RM's were carried in flap holsters as most of the original patrolmen rode motorcycles on mostly gravel highways. Several other holsters were used and the last 30+ years saw the Bill Jordan in use.

My Dad had friends who were MHP and they often let me handle their empty revolvers when I was a kid. I started as a LEO in 1969 and often worked with MHP officers on things and always admired the well made N frame .357's. I looked for one when I first started and when I finally found one there was a model 58 laying beside it in the display case. After some intense decision making I chose the 58 and wore it for several years on duty. I have since picked up several 27's and one 627-0. These are S&W craftmanship at it's best.
