Default Identifying Timeline for 17/3's

I've been looking at a S&W in a pawn shop. It's in excellent condition and I might be interested in buying it. He seller says it is an late 50's gun, but it's marked 17/3. Could this time frame be right? I looked in the book I have and if I understand it right, this could only be possible in a 1980's gun. Am I right about this? Thanks.

Guns marked "MOD 17-3" in the yoke cut should date somewhere between 1967 and 1977.

+1. The earliest it could be is '67.

You can easily prove the dealer wrong by showing him there is no cylinder stop plunger screw in front of the trigger guard. This change was implemented by late 1962. A late 50s revolver would still have the old style cylinder stop and have the screw in front of the trigger guard.
