Default Help repairing pre-29 finish with cold blue

I recently purchased a pre-29 shooter with a 4 inch barrel. The previous owner had applied cold blue to the end of the muzzle on both sides and a few spots on the frame. Should I remove the cold blue? I do not mind having worn spots in the finish, but the cold blue worries me. It looks like there may be surface rust under the cold blue.

I can post pictures if it will help.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I would let it soak in Corrosion-X for a few days.
The cold blue won't "seal" any rust below it. After it soaks a few days, rub it hard with a soft clean cotton flannel cloth.

Default Clarifying question...

Lee, thank you for the quick response. I need your help with some clarification. When you say "soak it"... do you mean take the grips off and buy enough corrosion-x to submerge the parts (sounds expensive) or do you mean to wipe lots of corrision-x on the affected spots and leave it there (maybe reapplying the corrosion-x over time)? Or is there another method you can suggest?

Thanks for your help.

You could just submerge the tip of the barrel for a few days for that area. To do that, take a small tin cap from something and fill it, that won't take much. For the sides of the frame, you should be able to lay the gun on it's side flat and put enough on the areas in question to keep them covered for a few days.

Default Thanks

That is a good set of suggestions. Will head to Academy tomorrow in search of some corrosion-x!

Thank you.

You don't have to submerge it. If there is a lot of area, put it in a plastic bag, and hose it down. Otherwise, just get the areas affected good and wet with it.

Usually, just wipe a liberal amount on the gun with a rag/patch soaked in Corrosion X. It doesn't have to sit in a bath of it.

Default Thank you, thank you so much (Brenda Lee Johnson voice)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am going to try it this week. The cold blue spots really detract from the look of the gun. Hopefully, I will have it looking like a "using" gun and not a bad hair dye job!
