Thumbs up 29-1s in 4 different barrel lengths

In a forum private discussion with another member this morning I got to thinking about the different stampings that were made on S&W 44 Magnums during an approximately one year period between 1962 and 1963. The gist of the discussion was that there are probably many more 44 Mags in the S220XXX-S230XXX range that could actually be considered model 29-1s, with the major exception that they simply are not stamped as such. Go to my commentary for further detail if you are interested in really getting down into the weeds with all of this. Here however, are 4 yoke stamped 29-1s that represent the different barrel lengths that have been discovered thus far. S227230 was well used, but is the only 3 screw 4 inch 29-1 that's turned up to date and it also represents the earliest 29-1 shipped. ( Note:there are 2 known nickel 4 screw 4 inch 29-1s; S220004 and S219982). S230941 represents the highest serial number 29-1 that has turned up and is celebrating it's 47th birthday later this month. S228956 is one of a handful of 8 3/8ths 29-1s and it celebrated it's 47th yesterday. And last but not least, S228672 is one of only 2 documented 5 inch 29-1s.
enjoy
Chuck

Chuck,

Don't know what I appreciate more....

Viewing the four guns posted is certainly a treat for the eyes.... But I like the ongoing research that you, Doc44, and others have done regarding the 4 - Screw era ~ and in particular how it relates to the various dash ones....

Find every new bit that is discovered - fascinating.

Hi Chuck:

Great group of 29-1's! Any 29-1 is rare but especially the short barrel lengths. How many 4 inch 29-1's have you documentated to date? Assume the 5 inch tally is still 3? Really appreciate the photo!

Bob

Default 29-1

Bob, I've only documented three 4 inch 29-1s to date; 1 3 screw and the 2 nickel 4 screw guns. As for the 5 inch guns, I only have 2 in my records. Good to hear from you.

Hi Chuck:

I knew the 4 inch 29-1's were very hard to find so not suprised that you found all three. It will definately be an uphill search to find one! The third 5 inch I herd of was sold to Hank Jr by Harrison many years ago. I never did get a serial number or was sure if it lettered. At least we know where two are!

Bob, the 4 inch 29-1 may be the hardest to find 44 Magnum I've ever looked for. That said, there hopefully will turn up a nickel 4 screw 6 1/2 and an 8 3/8ths some day. I'd like to get down to a 16 gun collection consisting of the possible 3/4 screw nickel/blue 29-1 variations in 4, 5, 6 1/2, 8 3/8ths barrel lengths. It'll probably never happen but that's the objective. I'd trade straight across my 12 guns of 1956 Jan-Dec, for a run of these 29-1s.
