They are available in my area for in the $350-400 range. The box with all the docs and tools would bring another $50 or so. The target trigger and hammer adds to the desirability some, but personally I wouldn't pay any premium for them. HTH

Your serial number appears one digit short. It should
have the letter K and six numbers. If the first three
numbers are correct the BOD would be 1960. Don

You must have missed a number before the K. 15-3's didn't come out until 1967, so it would have beem made after that sometime, but as Don said, the serial you gave would make it a much earlier gun. Look at the bottom of the grip frame, and also in the crane recess. The numbers there should both be the same.

Looks like 1974 per my SCSW. If it was for sale in my neck of the woods I'd give $450!

These guys are putting you on.
That gun is worth $100. However, since I'm an incredibly generous (as well as honest) person, I'll send you a check for $150 and take it off your hands.

Just kidding.

Seriously, I'll bet my wife would give you $450 for it. She shot more than 200 rounds out of our Model 15-2 (1963) last Sunday. She was grinning from ear to ear, having the time of her life. She even let me shoot it a few times!

I gotta admit, the 15 is one of the best damn guns ever produced.

We paid $350 last year for the one shown. It's worth more, especially with the box. I'd give at least $400.

I bought a pre-15 production 1951 early this year. Price $299.00. This was in California. It has the target hammer and trigger. I would say the revolver condition is around 80 to 85%. Yours looks better than mine by the pictures. All revolvers have gone up since then. Now in California they about $350.00 to $450.00. Too me they are harder to find than a model 10. But the model 10 will bring about the same. The model 15 is the finest 38 special revolver ever made. The model 10 is real close. You should not have any trouble selling the revolver.
Good luck,
roaddog28

The Great Southern Gun Show was in Jackson, MS last weekend. I saw only one M-15 and the price was $465. I don't know if it had the box and papers, but the finish appeared to be more worn than yours looks to be.

I'm not home to look at my book but that's pretty close to the serial number on my 15-3 and it is around 1969.

This is a thread that for some unknown reason was revived from November 2009. The link to pics has probably been changed by the original poster since then.

Default Age of S&W 15-3

Hi all-
Brand new to the forum. I was left a 4" S&W from my father when he passed. My mother just gave it to me. There is some rust that can be fixed on the cylinder and barrel. What is the year of manufacture on s/n 3 K73836?

Thank you.

Welcome to the FORUM! It is always nice to receive a personal item from a family member. It does not help to ease the pain of the loss. My father left me a M&P, 6" .38. (shipped June 1919) a few years before he passed. My oldest son has it now.
Look at the sticky in the 1980-present section, for age help. I do not have the book of numbers.
Sounds like it needs a workout at the range. Bob

Has anyone looked at the start date of this thread? The prices quoted would be really nice in today's market.

Looks like the resurrection occurred yesterday when "tdsellaro" posted a question about his/her 15-3..................

Default New to S&W handguns

Hi all! I'm new here. I just purchased a 3913LS 9mm and was given a 15-3 .38 revolver as a gift. They are both in wonderful condition. I had been looking for the 3913LS for years and finally found one, but it's the 15-3 that is most interesting to me...I carried one in the USAF in 1987-1988 in Panama. With a serial number of 1K62006, would anyone have a guess as to when it was made? How would I find out for sure? Thanks!!!

Not a guess. The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 4th Edition says serial range 1K39501 to 1K99999 equates to 1971. The only way to know for sure is to request a letter from Smith and Wesson. There are instructions on how to request a letter elsewhere on this forum or you can contact S&W directly.

The 5K serial numbers were shipped in 1973 and 1974. "Excellent condition" means different things to different people. Value will also depend on whether or not you have the original box, tools, and paperwork.

Probably the best way to determine a value for your revolver is to search completed auctions on GunBroker for one in similar condition. In my area, the gun alone in 95-99% condition would bring between $400 and $550. Pictures would help.

Yeah, but the last post asks a legitimate question and may deserve an answer? Would be ideal if people new to the forum knew to start a new thread rather than resurrecting old ones. There are worse things here and in life in general.
