Question S&W Model 547 9mm Revolver NIB condition with Box is $950.00 too much?

An friend of mine has a S&W 547 9mm revolver, it has the box and it is in like brand new condition, he has never shot it that he can remember. He wants to sell a few of his collection, and told me if I wanted this he would let it go for $950.00. Is this a rare gun? I have never even heard of a 9mm revolver until he was showing me this and by golly it doesn't even need moon clips as he pointed out. Any one with any information on this gun and the price, please let know. As it sure looks pretty and no marks on it anywhere, even the wooden grips are spotless. Also what is the years that S&W made these as that would help also. I am posting this in the 1961 to 1980 forum as I have an idea that this is the time frame of its manufacturing date. Any help or comments would be appreciated! Thanks

That gun was introduced in 1980. I think $950.00 is a little high but I could be wrong. There are not that many 9MM revolvers out there and this one is mint as you say. I would gander a guess that $750.00 would be closer to what it is worth.

$950 is not bad it is a rare gun what barrel does it have they made a 3 inch and a 4 inch they made 10,270 from 1980-1985 6486 round butt with 3 inch barrels and 3784 with a square butt 4 inch barrels and i think they made them for the Israelis Palestinian Police force

I think this is a rare gun to find NIB and the gun has high collector interest. They are sold regularly in the $750-$850 range on the gun auction sites with the box. There have been a couple over a thousand for the NIB condition.

My take is it depends on how fast you want to sell it. I agree with Hunt200 that $750 is closer to what it is "worth". If you price it in the $750-$850 range it will sell quickly if truely NIB. If you are willing to wait a while, I think you could get $950 or more for it - you just have to wait for the right buyer. My personal opinion is that at over a $1000 the wait will be very long, but might be worth it to you.

So the real question is, how patient are you?

I think that the asking price of a nice 4" M547 would be around $750-$850..
There has been a few on GB lately @ $950 but they aren't selling, I did see a MINT NIB one sell for $1200 on there quite a while back..
They aren't gonna make any more of them & yes the 4" Square Butt is a bit more rare than the 3" Round Butt..
All M547s have fixed sights & semi spured hammer, also note they have two floating firing pins, one pushes the case farward the other strikes the primer, They also have the very unique extractor segments that eject the rimless cartridges made from Berilium Copper..
My example is fairly early as it has a pinned barrel..
They are a very unique revolver & you realy don't see them for sale very often, There 25-30 years old now..

Have to comment on the post claiming an Israeli connection, this idea has been floating around the web about the 547 for a year or two now. I far as I know it is incorrect, rather the 547 was developed for the French police who rejected it.

Interesting piece from a collectors standpoint.
Whats amazing is outside collectability, its amazing a 9mm revolver has a following and actually fetches such a premium.
Especially in a day when Hi Cap plastic autos entertain the majority of the market..
Those that dont preach Hi cap usually preach .45 for knock down power.

Here is a handgun with neither high capacity, .45 knockdown power, Costs more than a .44 magnum, and is...well,.. expensive.

As to the rumours of its origin, kinda makes sense about the Isreali's especially with the politcal environment in the middle east in 1985.
Although I have not found anything concrete rumours persist.
Interestingly SCSW says nothing about the rumour which also leads me to belive it is just that.
A quick search finds this website which has a disclaimer as to the truth of such a rumour.
Vintage Pistols - Smith & Wesson 547 Range Report

Beyond collectability and round commonality a 9mm revolver just makes no sense.
That doesnt meen I wouldnt buy one , but it would have to cost less than a clean model 19 or 29 that outpower it.......

Outside collectability ....IMHO, It would kinda be like if Glock's new lineup came out with a new large frame semi auto handgun that fired .357 magnum revolver cartridges with a magazine capacity of 3 rounds and cost $1200.00.

If I could get a NIB 547 for $950, those standing in my immediate vicinity would get windburn from the speed with which I pulled out my wallet and fanned out the Grants and Franklins on the counter. But the gun is not on the DOJ-certified list here in California, nor does it have C&R status (though it should as an engineering curio). Thus no 547 can be imported into California, and any 547 I buy will have to be in this state already. I will have to pay the California premium for it. I don't think I am likely to stumble across one soon.

Is that 50=100 too much? Yes. But when was the last time you saw one for sale? And really, what is a hundred dollars? You spend that at the grocery store, and it does not last. Buy the gun and keep it. My boss at work teases me about paying too much for guns. I never pay too much...sometimes I buy too early, but the value always catches up.Would you give $200 for a 22/32 kit gun with the box and papers? I did, and my friends thought I gave too much. Think they will say that now?

If you can afford it, and he won't budge on the amount: go for it...
As an investment, this is sound advice. Not many pistols appreciate in value, more so the other way. Rarity will always win out in the end.
If you plan to make it a range gun, I wouldn't invest that kind of money.
I'm not that crazy about the trigger pull and I won't modify a unique pistol in case a purist might want to purchase some day...
He who hesitates loses out...Don't wait too long...

In the early nineties of the last century, the shooting-range I frequented had a Kettner gunshop on the premises.
It had a couple of the 4¨ nine mill revolvers, new in box.
I was told that they were special made for the French police, as the 9 mm was the standard issue ammo and some officers did not like pistols as duty guns.

I cannot remember what the asking price was, as my interest in owning something in 9mm was very low...

Are you kidding? You can't but a revolver that is not currently in California?

I feel for you as you probably have heard a million times to move from that place; but a revolver?- what explanation could the state come up with that would not make one puke upon hearing it. I'm sorry, but some places can't call themselves free anymore!!!!!!! What a crock of ..................

Heh heh. I'm with DCWilson. For $950 I'd buy a NIB 547 4" square butt in a heartbeat. It isn't that I'm in love with 9mm's per se, but hey! It's an interesting and unusual Smith!

Six years ago, I bought my NIB 547 for $385. It is no longer NIB, but it's still in excellent condition. Recently, I turned down $1,100 when it was offered to me...............

There is a forum member here that goes by "5wire". He tracks the prices that 547's sell for and has a great graph of same. It hasn't been that long since he posted the graph, so maybe you can find it with the search function.

If this revolver has the pinned barrel (some did and some did not) I would give $950 for it. I would think $850 would be about right for a nib post pinned barrel model although I know they have gone for more. Is it pinned?

My memory may not serve me well, but it seems like I read on this forum there were a small few made on the N frame. That aroused my curiosity then, but not enough to look further into it. Any truth in this? Hope this is not off subject...

Cool

I'd be on it like a fly on a garbage can lid if that 547 was on my to-have list.

None made in N frame-but the later 8 shot N frames in .357 have had extra cylinders in 9MM made for them. I have one of the 8 shot N frames with 3 cylinders, I can shoot all the 9mm rounds(9X19, 9X21, and 9X23), .380, .38 Super, and S&W 356 TSW in it, and .357/.38 special of course.
The urge to shoot auto rounds in a wheelgun is inexplicable, but I have it. Got a clutch of 9mm, 40S&W/10mm, .45ACP revolvers. One of the nice things is that 9mm is cheaper than 38s now, and years ago I laid in a lifetime supply of 9mm & .45 ACP ball ammo. Further the ammo builders are making some really potent loads in the auto rounds that can be used quite wwell in wheelguns. The reloads are greased lightening fast, and it is just kind of neat.

I'm a little late on the thread but I do think $900 for the 4-inch 547 as described is not at all out of line. Here's my track on the gun:

Smith & Wesson 547 4” SB Revolver in 9 mm. Bluebook of Gun Values (30th Edition) indicates between $675 in 98% condition and $775 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 39 recorded prices for this model gun from $450 to $1299 over a period of 6 Yrs 6 Mos ending March 9, 2010. The average price as of that date was $667. No refurbs, no refinishes, all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $317.

Here's how the data charts out through November 2009 where the average price trend is about $850 and rising. The chart is three months behind the data, sorry .

(Thanks for the shout out and kind words, M28)

Default Model 547

I stopped at a pawn shop in San Antonio last Saturday and they had a really clean 3" 547 with the original banana grips. Asking price, $999. I guess they knew what they had. On a side note, while there, I bought a Colt 1908 vest pocket 25 auto for $100.

I had two..... both were 3" RB, they came from the same local gun shop
one was NIB...the other was pistol only. IMO the first run 4" that had pinned barrels are the rarest, very small numbers of 4" were pinned. I still have the tag from the one that was NIB.....16D16xx 3"RB.....$299.95 Fort Darling Armory Firearm Division...Rich,VA.
I would not pay $950.00 for a 547....IMO the young gunners of today do not care for "Wheel Guns".....many are "Black Plastic Crazy"...it is just a matter of time.....our kids will be giving away our Smiths for peanuts.:-(

There were more 4-inchers made. I forget the ratio. The 4-inch seems to be considered more collectible, its prices are apparently climbing. The 3-inchers (my fave) seem to be declining in cost.

This is how the data I had at the time (August 2009) indicates those trends, FWIW:

Actually I'm going to have to sell it to pay for a unforseen repair.

Some of these had the barrel pinned and some did not. If it was a pinned model then I feel that $950 is a very fair price. If the barrel is not pinned, I might try to negotiate down a little.

Default S&W 547 9mm

I would be willing to go $1000 for a nice S&W 547 3 inch barrel.

If he bought it for $950 he can now get $1500-1800 for it. One went for $3575 on GB recently when 2 fools with money got into a bidding war.

Gee, that kind of money got me into a "bucket list" model 58, more collectable and more firepower than a 9mm revolver. One hell of a good gun, shoots 9mm type flat with a 210gr JHP round. JMHO tho....jb
