Model 12 picture thread
Got a new to me S&W model 12-2 with grips
that are numbered to the gun, and has a 98% finish.
I would like to see what your model 12 looks like.

Nice guns guys! Which brings up a question in my mind. Why were so many of the 2" M12's made with SB? The only 2" one I ever owned was SB, and I see some of yours are as well. On the M10 2" you see more RB than SB, but the opposite on M12. What do you think?

I agree that Square butt M-12's are more prevalent.
Here is mine,
BTW, when looking at model 12's remember that the frames are a different thickness which meens the grips are also a different thickness.
My recollection is the M12 frame is actually thinner than the M10 to make them even lighter.
The end result is grips do not interchange without major work.
Cheers

I've owned a few along the way. One was a kind of oddball 4" RB. The guns I had were 12-2's or 12-3's. Anyone have a 12-4 that is supposed to have the standard thickness K Frame?

Jcmack,
In answer to your question about grips on a 12-4, the one I posted earlier in this thread is a 12-4 and has standard K frame grips that came off a 10-5 on it. Not a perfect fit but no gaps.

I've fitted mod 10 grips to 12 pre dash 4's. I never ran across a 12-4 in the flesh.

I have a M12 flat latch that dates to early 1962 with a square butt with diamond grips that feel like a velvet glove to me. It's worn just enough to give it character. I bought it at a show about 10 years ago for a really good price. Great carry piece. I really like the square butt.

Mr. COYOTE: That is an outstanding looking mod 12. I had a twelve SB years ago. It came with standard K frame magna non diamond grips. I took the grips and fitted them to the gun. I later sold the gun and now wish I now had the thing after seeing yours with service grips. If the grips are original, they must be pretty rare. I'm in the market for one to carry.

Is anyone in Colorado willing to swing by fellow forum member Executioner's place ( Grashorns Gunworks ) and lend him their M12 so we can get custom stocks fitted for these? I inquired about this via email but shipping mine to him would be cost prohibitive.

When I bought this S&W model 12 from a Police Supply Warehouse, it had "N" frame target grips on it! I'd hate to see the size of that Cops hands!

I have recently purchased a Model 12-2 SB. I am wondering about the DOB of the gun and looking for a good concealed carry holster for a big'um, LOL. Serial Number is d766xxx, just looking a for a round about age on it.

Nice M12s. "SmithNut", showing yours is just plain cruel! I bet that would cost an arm and a leg. I've been looking for a 2" - 4 RB but I let one get away before I knew better. I've almost aquired a -2 several times but the grip issue give me pause. Guess I should just do it, Again, great guns!

To those of you that have fit standard K-frame grips to a -3 or older M12, what is involved in the procedure?

It is relatively simple. You need to remove wood from the back of the grip panel. NOT IN THE HORN AREA OF THE GRIP PANELS. Take some fairly aggressive grit sandpaper and lay a sheet on a FLAT surface. Take a standard K grip panel and lay the back flat on the sandpaper an sand it back and forth. Fit it to the frame for every 5-6 strokes on the paper. When the horn of the grip is flat on the frame, you start on the other side. I think it's like .015 each side.

M12 4" RB
Here's mine -
Used to go on long walks in the desert with me; first two chambers loaded with snake shot for rattlers and such, remaining chambers loaded for coyotes (two and four footed variaties).
I had a similar one available to me in the arms room in Panama.
Peace,
