CTG=cartridge.

The Highway Patrolman (Model 28 after 1957) is an N frame 357 Magnum offered with zero options beyond barrel length (4" or 6"). The finish was a basic brushed blue and there were no options on triggers and hammers. The M28 HP was meant to be an economical service revolver for police.

The 4" versions usually bring slightly more than the 6" guns. In good condition they sell for $400-$450 in most cases. Just guessing that serial seems like early 1970s. This gun should be marked MOD 28-2 on the frame under the cylinder crane. The -2s were made from 1962 until 1983.

The HP was introduced in 1954. I have one from about the 2nd month of production.

The year of manufacture is 1973, per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

I would expect one in very good condition to excellent condition to go for $500 or so.

The HP's have a bit of a cult following here, maybe even more so than their fancy brother, the Model 27. Read the post below if you haven't already. Very nicely done.

Actually, the Highway Patrolman/Model 28 had one option, besides choice of 4 or 6 inch barrel. Target grips were a factory option.

Roy said that no HPs shipped with Targets and I agree with that. Dealers swapped them on for customers.

Well, maybe not normally, but the the HP's we ordered for our department were all ordered with target stocks.

I don't count special orders. S&W used to do ANYTHING on special order (most commonly small runs for PD orders). One Registered Magnum was built on special order in 22 Long Rifle. Does that mean RMs were available in 22 LR? If a police agency requested 50 HPs with targets no doubt S&W would ship them that way. But an individual buyer could not order Targets on an HP.

I have a 28-2 4 inch. Production 1967 to 1968. I love the revolver for shooting 357 magnums. It soaks up recoil better than any of my other 357s including my 686-3.

You will enjoy many, many rounds through an N frame in good shape. They are great to shoot and very accurate. My 28 is very close in serial number range and I someow have a feeling that it won't be my first one. Enjoy your 28.

At least two of my 28s came from the factory with targets, both WSP commemoratives. That may be cheating, though!

Congratulations on the purchase as it's one of S&W best revolvers. it's the exact same gun mechanically as the Model 27 but it lacks the high luster blue and the steel checkered top strap.

That sure looks like target stocks were a factory option on the HP at one point. A $5 upgrade...gotta love it !

I bought my 6" Highway Patrolman in the early 60's with my paper route and lawn mowing money. I was 12 or 13 at the time, so my Dad did the transaction for me. These are true workhorses. Mine has taken countless jackrabbits in Central Oregon, along with a few other critters and a couple of rattlesnakes. I haven't counted lately, but my guess is I have 25-30 S&W revolvers. If I could only keep one, it would be the Mod. 28. I'd get rid of my 6" Python before the HP.

I just found a good deal on a 586 which has been a pleasure to shoot. The model 28 is next on my list. I always enjoyed shooting it as a kid. My dad had pleany of model 28's and Pythons. If I had both I would probably sell the Python and buy 2 or 3 Smiths. It's unbelieveable what those are selling for around this neck of the woods.

Ever hear the saying,"Everything old is new again"? In the early 1980s I carried a 4" HP on duty as a security patrol officer. I retired it and got a 4" 686. Now I find myself carrying the HP concealed more often when off duty. For some reason it just feels right.

We have inherited a used S&W .357 Hwy Patrolman, 6" barrel with a Bushnell Phantom II 13X scope, s/n S224169 that is in very good to excellent condition.
Can anyone tell me the year of manufacture and approximate value Please.

I can't help you with a value estimate without pic's as ORIGIONAL condition means everything. The serial# dates to about 1961.

what is it marked inside the cylinder ?
mod 28 mod 28-1 or mod 28-2 ? also does it have a screw in the front area of the trigger guard ?

cross your fingers and hope it is 28-1

Highway Patrolman threads seem to be in great demand these days.

Welcome to the Forum, dad! You might do well to start a thread on this, as many folks will take a look at a 2 year old thread and not bother to read it entirely. Pictures are necessary in order to get a better understanding of condition, and with few exceptions condition is everything when trying to put a value to a gun. As Weatherby points out, the model and dash number are important too. The dash number indicates factory production changes by the way. And model numbers were not assigned until 1957, so that helps date the gun as well.

Did some shooting yesterday with my brother, and his wife.

Loaded up some .38spcl in the old Highway Patrolman and let them both shoot it. They loved it, and my Sister in Law shot better than everyone else. She is a natural.

This one is so much fun too shoot:

A colt python 357mag / 6" barrel is the most accurate 357mag I ever shot. The action was so smooth too.

The average prices I'm seeing on a m28 / 6" HP is $695. The M28 / 4" is a tad higher maybe $700.

I bought it new in May 1962 for the $85.00 price shown in another post, (plus 3% sales tax). Still have the gun after 53 years.

I own a Smith & Wesson 28-0 .357 Magnum Double Action Revolver 6.00" s/n S203601. I figure it for the early 70's.

A Model 28 with a serial number in that range would have been shipped ca. 1959-1960. The 28-0 is the initial model number for the Highway Patrolman after S&W started assigning model numbers in ca. 1957.

An early 1970's serial number would begin with "N", since the "S" prefix was discontinued as a result of the 1968 Gun Control Act.

I had a mod 28 back in 1985 -1986, best revolver I ever had. Who know's where I traded it. I have recently started looking again. I just wanted the 28 6". Well now I have 2- 1954's serial's "S118 & S120", and a 1959 ser # 202 & like the rest of you definately looking for a 28-1 now. Someone up the thread said only 4" & 6", all I knew about also but there was supposed to have been Fewer than 100 8 3/4" made, year unknown. & Florida Highway Patrol had 25- 5" nickle plated #32 thru #56 shipped in 1959.

I've never heard Roy say that. Perhaps you misconstrued something he said. Roy was production manager for some years, so he has to know some 28s had Targets.
The AMCs always offered Target stocks.

I only run .22 shorts through my 28-2 HP. I dont want to put stress on the frame or run the risk of cracking the forcing cone! Seriously and sadly though only have one of my two HPs left sold one to an old boss and he wound up being a DB so no way of buying/trading back for it.

Reference the prices, a 1954 Ford or Chev cost about $2200-2300. Today, that is closer to $30,000, although they are better equipped these days.

A $90 gun back then would now translate easily to $1500-1700. Printing tons of paper money has it's costs.

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows the N-prefix serial numbers in the 200000 series ran from 1974 to 1977. Others will be along with better information. My guess would be 1975. As is debated at some length in this thread, the original grips would have been wood, either the Magna (much more common) or the Target style. You can probably find correct original grips, if that matters to you, on ebay or gunbroker. There are also several sources of present day custom grips in various materials. Your 28 looks to be in very good condition. I purchased one about a year ago from a private party for in similar condition for $500, also without original grips.

It was fast cars, drag racing, drooling over flathead v8 with off's heads plus even faster babes. Never thought about guns well maybe one? Lmao we did have a pump pellet gun.
