Model 60

Hi, I'm new and this is my first post on the Forum. Got my second S&W revolver today and don't know much about it. It's a Model 60 with no dashes serial number R202146. I will try to post some pictures of it tomorrow. Would love to know where I can find the date of manufacture. It is one beautiful revolver, though.

Any information would be muchly appreciated.

Production date was either 1977 or 1978. If I had to guess I'd say late 1977.

Welcome to the forum. You made a wise choice buying
the model 60. S&W first introduced the model 60 in 1965
and I guess they are still making them. If the SS needs
any cleanup use some Flitz on it. You can buy Flitz at
most hardware stores. You can also shoot some +P loads
in it on occasion. Looking forward to seeing your pictures. Don

My first post reply which is not exactly a reply but a couple of questions. I recently aquired a Model 60 (no dash), Serial No. R217xxx. My questions are: 1) When was it made? 2) The hammer has been bobbed and I want to go back to the original so where can I locate a stainless steel hammer that will fit?

You can try Brownells for a factory hammer or even contact S&W to see if you can buy one from them. You can also try a local gunsmith to see if he can get the hammer and install it.

Hi, and welcome. The serial number dates it to 1977. You can post a wanted ad on the site, and I'm sure someone out there has a stainless service J frame hammer. You can also try Brownell's, e-gunparts.com or one of the gun auction sites. Enjoy!

Thanks for the replies. I have put a request in the Buy, Sell, Trade to see if I get any replies from there. Would sorta like to get a used one so it might fit better. Did locate a new one at e-gunparts and may have to bite the bullet and buy it. Had a discussion with another member and I might modify the one that I have.

Oh, yes, I did post a photo of this Model 60 on the Buy, Sell, Trade forum. If you look at it does anyone know what type of grips are on it? They have S&W on the disks. I haven't seen them on any of the S & W's on the forums especially other Model 60's.
