Opinions on the 66-1
I have a chance to pick up a 2 1/2" model 66-1, and was just curious what the general consensus is on this one? The price hasn't been finalized, but I'm thinking it'll be around $300.00 or so.
Did these P&R models hold up any better or worse than the later
K-frames with the crush fit barrels?

I think as far as quality goes there is no difference. I just
like the older P&R guns. Sometimes older is not better it's just
older. If the gun is in good condition $300 sounds
very good. Don

I have a 4 inch 66-1 that I have owned for some time. No issues with it, shoots like a dream. I don't think the older P&R guns are necessarily any better than the newer ones. Some people just appreciate the extra workmanship it took to produce them.

I'd jump on that gun for $300. They typically sell around here for another $150. I have a 4" Model 66-1 and have always been very pleased with that revolver.

That sounds like a great deal. A couple months ago I picked up a 66-1 with 4 inch barrel for about $450 from a pawn shop in Texas. Difficult to say exactly what it cost because it was part of a combo deal. But anyway, it is wonderful to shoot - one of my favorites as to how it feels in the hand. I believe it was a LEO gun - heavily worn-in but well cared for. It came with Pachmayrs but I fitted worn targets to it. The cylinder has a fair bit of end play. I'd estimate the revolver has several thousand rounds through it, but it still locks up like a champ and the action is very smooth. Here is a shot of it (I am experimenting with indoor photography and lighting, so apologize for the ****** picture):
After excessive consideration and echoing what others have said, I decided that I like pre-1982 guns the best, although some 80s and 90s guns have been very good for me also. I avoid the post-2002 guns (due to internal lock) though. The pinned and recessed features are signs of a certain level of craftsmanship, though my non-P&R guns function perfectly fine as well.

Just about any K Frame snub sells for $500-$600 around here..
I won't say "sells" but that the asking prices at the Gunshows..
$300 sounds like a steal to me..

Ok, just where is this gun you haven't bought or showed us photos of? I'll be happy to fix the photo problem for that price.

I'd scoop it. I will not part with my 3" 66 or 4" 66.

Great gun!!
Bought a 66-1 a few weeks ago. It has target hammer and trigger. absolutely the smoothest action of all my revolvers (models 36, 10, 19, 64). I paid $435 for mine, and thought it was a good deal.

Get it. Great gun at a prospectively good price.
Best of the 'shooting' K or L snubbies, if you ask me.
AirComando you bought what?

I carried and fired qualification with one for over 10 years. The Model19/66 is the finest revolver that Smith (or anyone else) ever made.
But, I may be just a little partial and biased.

Amen. I paid $618.00 for a 4 inch 66. But I did get lucky and found another 4 inch 66 for $300.00 at Turner outdoorman. This is in California. You will be very happy with a 66. One of the best.
Good luck,

I am getting a 66 4" for $395 + tax and have been wondering if this is too much.So by what I'm seeing, this isn't too bad of a deal.

BUY IT!
A good 66-1 snub for $300 is a terrific deal around these parts. I have one that I shoot better than my 6" 66-1 for some reason. Its smooth as silk in the trigger area. They were the gun to have when I was a young cop in the 70's and they are still excellent. They were higher end guns back in my day and the extras such as red insert front sight and recessed chambers and pinned barrel were little things that came on the higher grade model. I wouldn't sell mine...period.

I have a 66-1 2.5" in 98% (I shoot it!!!), but it still looks new. It's my best Smith! I paid $325 about 5 years ago, but it looked unshot. They're going for $450+ in my area, maybe more. You can't do better than a M-66-1 2.5" for $300. The lowest price......... for the ultimate combat revolver!!!! What are you waiting for????? Bob
