S&W M17 finish?
Had a chance to pick up a M17 today 8 3/8" bbl but it had a matte or a dull finish on it. Is that an original finish?
thanks,

Welcome to the forum
By the time K22's started being Model marked 17 the finish was pretty much standardized with a polish blue finish like most other models. Prior to about 57-58 it could have shipped with either a dull Highway Patrolman finish, or a bright blue finish

Some did. It depends on the year of mfg. If you post the first few digits of the serial #, filling in the last 2 or 3 with xxx, we can tell better. A picture would help a lot too.
I have one with a matte factory finish, and it's from 1948.

Thanks for the welcome.
It would be a little difficult to get the serial number but I will try. I saw it at a flea market vendor. I'm pretty sure it was marked M17 inside of the frame. Nice finish and it did not looked to be refinished. Sharp lettering. Polymer grips with S&W emblem. Just did not have a good feel for it or it would have followed me home.
thanks,
