Default Smith m36 vs Rossi m68 -- d/a trigger

I have a 3" smith m36 (no dash) and a 2" Rossi m68. Both were purchased used.

They are both .38spl 5-shot d/action revolvers, as you all know.

The S&W trigger at rest in d/a mode sits back further than the Rossi's trigger. The Rossi d/a trigger position is almost hard to reach, especially compared with the Smith. Therefore I'm more accurate with the S&W.

Is the trigger position something that varies gun-to-gun within a model, or does it vary make/model-to-make/model?

I've not been able to find another Rossi .38 to compare.

Please understand, I am not trying to disparage the Rossi. i'm trying to learn how revolvers may differ in the trigger position; or if this is something that can and does get adjusted, like replacing the grip, for example.

I just physically compared my Rossi 68 with my Smith 36-2 and I see no difference in trigger position. Are you maybe comparing trigger reach due to differing grips types? If the grips cover the back of the frame versus not covering the frame back strap or vary in width from gun to gun this will affect how you perceive the trigger and the actual distance to the trigger .Are the grips on both guns alike?
I actually find my Rossi easier to shoot double action than some of my J frame Smiths.

Milton, thanks for the reply . . . it is clear to me now that what I had perceived as a different "trigger lie" was caused by the rubber grip differences.

The S&W (round butt) is fitted with a Pachmeyer "Gripper" which, as you can see from the photo, extends down into the trigger guard. The Rossi (square butt) is fitted with a Rossi rubber grip which stops at the top rear of the trigger guard. This causes the knuckle of my middle finger to press against the rear of the trigger guard which is very uncomfortable (painful) when you fire a round. So when I shoot the rossi, I adgust my forefinger to wrap around the trigger a bit leaving my middle finger knuckle out of the way. This causes my hand to feel as if the trigger needs a longer pull. The photos show the situation.

I need to look for a square butt Gripper, that fits my Rossi.

Greetings,

I have a Rossi Model 720, which was their medium sized frame, K-frame sized revolver in .44 Special. It has a coil spring construction like a J-frame, and replacement grips are almost non-existent, unless you want to go the custom grip route. I have two thoughts regarding your pistol: 1) drastic: you may want to modify the grip frame of your Rossi to the J-frame configuration; 2) try grips that don't have the finger cut-outs. I'd try the latter, before the former to see if that will work for you. If it doesn't, and you are planning on keeping the Rossi, I'd look to option 1. It probably wouldn't take a lot of work, and could probably be done with simple hand tools.

Best of luck,

Dave

The Compac grips I ordered were described as being made for Rossi small revolvers. Let's hope they fit.

Default got new grips . . .

I received my new Pachmayr Compac grips. Below are two photos: gun & label.

The new grips solved my problem. If any of you need the same, you must specify which gun as Pachmayr makes many versions.

Thanks for your messages . . .

Yes, they worked out indeed.

I shot a bunch of different loads today. That little lip of rubber at the rear of the trigger guard makes all the difference!

Hello: Was wondering if anyone knows if the s&w j frame grips will fit the rossi m851 4" bbl 6 shot old brazilian made revolvers?

I was also told that the ROS/C will fit this revolver. Does anyone know if this if fact? Thanks from the Piney woods of TX.

Default Interesting to see Rossi owners here...I recently bought a

462 stainless 2" .357 magnum 6 shot, adn I am very happy with it. I did replace the trigger spring with one recommended by Wolff Springs for their S&W J frame, and it is a real improvement costing all of $4.
I own 5 S&W revolvers at this time but carry the Rossi regularly.

Old thread but I likey this! I have a Taurus 24/7 9MM that I traded into that doesn't light my fire and on my list of trade options is a Airweight J.

Some guy locally is trying to trade me the Rossi copy. I'm hesitant because, well, it isn't a S&W but with those grips it looks like it would fill the intended role of: .38 snub, not as bulky as my SP101
