Try Googling firearms sight picture. I'd do it for you but the Steelers are coming on! Make sure you use a stable bench and seat with sandbags, stay off the caffeine and squeeze that trigger keeping the same sight picture EVERY shot.
Use a .22 LR if you're not familiar with shooting. Works wonders if you already are and picked up some bad habits.
WTH, Here's a start.

It's GREAT to hear you're teaching them at a young age. My Dad was never into firearms, so what little I learned came from a week at Boy Scout camp & then 4 years with Uncle Sam.
Any man can be a father, but it takes the special ones to be a Dad.
Bless you!

Great to see you're teaching the kids. So much anti firearm BS out there. Like the pictures show, 'standard' open sights have equal distance from the edges of the rear sight slot, and the top of both sights level. The target is placed at the top of the front sight. Also you're concentrating on the front sight and the target. Peep sight pretty much the same, top of the front sight centered in the peep and placed at the bottom of the target.

FWhen I am teaching, informally, I often "DRAW" a proper sight picture.
When I am sighting in a field pistol, I want my sights to hit right at point of aim (not the six o'clock hold favored by target shooters). An easy way to do this is to hold at six o'clock but adjust your sights to have the bullets strike at the junction of the black and white of the Bullseye target.
This gives you a defined target but adjusts the POI where you need it.
