Default I paid for my first time

Not much though. A pretty nice Model 36, for the very nice price of $75 circa 1986.

Default first one cost

Police Price in Elkhart Indiana 1963. Model 37, holster, box of shells. $53.50. My father was a friend of the dealer John Hite. 45 autos at the time were $20 each by the box full. Oh well, didn't have any money then either.

I remember John Hites store. My Dad used to go there for reloading supplies when he was in the the reserves and was doing alot of shooting at Copper Canyon and in police combat matches.

My first S&W was a 1917 - actually a Brazillian 1937 - bought in April 1986 for $225. That was a bit high for the time, but it was in better than average condition. That's $444 in 2009 dollars. It'd be hard to find one for that today.

According to some old receipts, my first S&W and my second S&W were bought on the same date (12-31-73). These guns came from a police supply company in Hollywood, Florida (Jones Equipment). The nickel Model 29 8 3/8" was $165.86 and the Model 60 was $101.47. I don't remember which gun was purchased first because the receipts are not numbered.

I bought a 3.5 inch blue 27 from Harwood Arms in 1973. I paid $225.00 for it and had to work all summer doing part time work putting in air conditioning ducts. I still itch from the rockwool.

$90 for a 28 in 1971.

Later, I went crazy and paid $235 for a 27 in 1979. Inflation, inflation.

$90 for a new Model 60 in 1971, from Demain's Police Supply. They were very hard to find back then, and no reason for the general public to even try, in our neck of the woods.

Hey flagman,
We must have been thinking alike! My first S&W was also a 4" 19-3, but mine arrived in 1979. Paid $198.50 for it, and like you still have it, box and all!

My first Smith & Wesson was a model 57 I purchased in 1973 for around $125.00 if I recall correctly. It resides in my safe with several other model 57's that I have added since.

There's a theme here. Model 19-3 4". $193.75 from Meltzer's Sporting Goods in Garfield NJ in 1977. That was a week's pay for an I&A police officer at the time. Joe

My first one was a 1981 non dash 686 with 6 inch barrel and I believe it was around $250. I didn't buy any pistol until 1982 but my Dad bought a Model 10-5 in 1968 when I was in the service that's now mine and I have no clue what he paid for it I'd love to know approximately what id cost new.

Bought my first Smith at Centre Gun Shop in Niagara Falls, Ontario on my 18th birthday and it was a Model 19-3 6"er New in 1976 for $265. Lot of money back then when the wages were $2.35 an hour. The Model 28-2's were going for $235 but decided on the M-19 because of the target grips they looked way more cool Eh!! LOL . Two years later i bought a 29-2 6 1/2"er New with presentation case up in Edmonton Alberta for $411 in 1978.The Model 57's were going for the same price. I do regret for selling off my 29-2 i wish i still had it now there going for $850 plus for a decent one. These were the only two guns that i ever bought new now i buy used because theres good deals out there ...

Cheers
Rick

S&W Model 19 4 inch mid seventies for $165.00 used in OKC. It was in layaway awhile as a GI didn't make much then. I had it reblued and an action job done on it and Herrett Shooting Master smooth grips. Fifty dollars for the gunsmithing and the grip box has a $25.50 price sticker.

I'd always thought I had too much money invested in that gun. You think I'd get my money back today? I know I'd buy 10 $250 Model 19s today if I found them.

My first S&W was a 17-4 with a 6 inch barrel. I bought it in late 1983 or early 1984 for 260.00. It was used but I would say about 99% condition. The action was a little stiff so I had the late Bob Chow of San Francisco do a trigger job. Still my favorite gun to shoot I know if I miss it is my fault.

Talking 66-1

Best that I can remember in 1987 I gave $200 for my 4" 66-1 recessed not pinned. This was the first gun that my FFL friend sold. He took it back in trade from the first owner and now it's mine.

6" M&P circa 1920 manufacture for $65 in 1978. Traded it and a Remington 870 to a local deputy for an unfired 4" M28-2 (he wanted $150 cash) and used Sam Browne rig the next year when I went on the PD and couldn't carry a 6".

The M&P was then sold to the guy my ex-GF took up with after we broke up. Never saw either of them again. The 28-2 was sold in a moment of weakness a couple of years after I pulled the pin.

See signature line for which one I miss.

I really don't remember but I do recall paying 115.00 for a colt match target back in 1971 or 72. I was on a snubby chase and paid 160.00 for a 60.

S&W 617-6, $520 shipped + $15 transfer three years ago.

First one that fits in this subforum? A S&W 10-6, well-used, $205 out the door at a gunshow last year.

First S&W was a 6 inch 586 in about 1981 or 1982.
Was jones'en badly on it and here is what it cost me:

Price was $350

I traded in a HK4 380 with broken extractor ($100)
Worked long hours over a weekend doing design work ($250)

Can't remember what the HK4 cost but I feel that it cost me a weekend.

I bought a four inch model 28 in Dec. 1972 for $108.00 to start my law enforcement career 01-01-73. I traded it and a .25 cal. colt junior auto which cost $50.00 for a 1968 python with the box which sold new in 1968 for $175.00 I still own the python. By the way when I bought the 28 I paid $60.00 for a complete duty belt/holster/handcuff-cartridge carrier/nightstick carrier/key carrier.

My first S&W Revolver was my mid-1960's Model 10-5 4" Standard Barrel. I paid $175 for it at a gun show about four or five years ago.
Thanks
Mark

Default My First S&Ws

My first two S&W pistols were a Model 28 with a 4" barrel and M1917 S&W Revolver. The person wanted to get an outboard motor in the worst way and he valued the M28 at $45 and the M1917 at $15 because the M1917 had a problem and sold them both for $60! This was back in the mid-1960's. He was really mad about the M1917 because he said that the person who sold it to him said that it would fire the .45 ACP rounds. He had tried it but he couldn't get the revolver to fire the .45 ACP rounds because there was a problem with the firing pin not striking the primers. I bought several half-moon clips and I had no problem shooting .45 ACP in the revolver. He was trying to shoot the M1917 WITHOUT the half-moon clips. I still have both guns to this day.

Sir, good question--I don't remember. My first Smith was a used 6-inch 629 (dash 1, I think) that I traded something for, but I'm not sure what. I pretty quickly swapped it off for something else, also long gone now.

The first Smith I bought new was a 3-inch Model 13 in '89 or so; seems like it cost $250 or $275, something like that. It's also long gone, and I didn't keep any of the paperwork on it.

I do have the paperwork on the Model 25-9 I bought new in '90 (still have it). That one set me back $366.35. At the time I was making $6 an hour, and my rent was $185 a month.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Default 1st one cost?

Got to this party late - around '93. First S&W was and is a ca 1981 586 nickel 4" for $300, said to be unfired then, yet no box, but "M" recall on firing pin assembly done.

Good to hear/see all your stories.

Regards,

Dyson

I cannot for the life of me remember what my 1st S&W was, but my first gun was a Ruger Super Single Six with both cylinders, new in box, with a left hand quick draw rig I bought in Big Spring, TX in 1964 for around $90.00. My first off duty gun was a Colt Det. Spl. with shrouded ejector rod that I bought in 1972 for $80.00 some dollars, and I had to put it on lay-away to get it .

Mdl 34-1 nickle in 1984 I think I paid $180 used like new. Used it as my ccw for awhile the only other hand gun I owned at the time was a Ruger Blackhawk in 41 mag.
