Confused looking at J&G Model 64's
I am seriously considering ordering a Model 64 from J&G, But I am having a hard time deciding which grade to get.
Tending toward the round butt version...Is it worth it to order the more expensive "very good plus grade", but I could be satisfied with the lower grade...Just can't decide.
My club has it's own FFL and offers free transfers, so really, the only additional cost is shipping to Ohio.
I tried a search for "model 64", but "64" is too short and was deleted...got 500 threads on every topic.

Good grief! Get the best grade that they have, and hope that they described it honestly.
I suspect that many of those ex-cop guns will be pretty rough.

I purchased one of their NY-1 model 64's. It came with some well worn Pach finger groove grips, and of course is DAO only. The gun itself is in nice condition and has a very smooth action. Obviously it was carried a lot but not shot as much. Typical of most cop guns.
My advice is to get the best one you can afford, but even if it doesn't look as nice as you would like, stainless polishes up nicely. Or you could matt the finish by blasting it.
Just my two cents worth.

Cops rarely hurt a gun shooting it....
dropping it, banging it on car doors, pavement, locker doors, tables, chairs etc....
I am sure J&G 64's are plenty worth the money....I have a 64 that rides in my patrol car with me as backup.....it is utterly reliable....doesn't look great, but that isn't why I have it

I purchased 2 round butt DAO , 4 Inch in the very best grade they had. Both guns were in much better condition than I expected and I would rate them as better than very good. The stocks on both ( goodyears) were pretty beat up I replaced them. I was very satisfied with the purchase and would and almost bought again. I have been looking at the 2" ones they now have.

I bought one recently. A VG, RB, DAO. The rubber stocks were awful but the rest of the revolver seemed almost unused. The few scratches polished out with Mothers. I think these are a steal! J&G told me it was from Brinks. Compare these prices to a retail 64 off GB, for example, and decide. If you want to, call Paulie at J&G and tell him what you desire. Good luck!

if anyone needs a handgun for general SD, nightstand, the truck glovebox, or just carrying as a bandit repeller, it is hard to beat the deal J&G has..you can buy a cheaper 38 revolver NIB, but it won't be a Smith and Wesson, and I would rather tote a used 64 than many other makers guns NIB....

A few months back I bought this Model 65 off Gunbroker, and I assume it was a police trade in. When it came in, it looked like it was dragged behind a truck - made you sick to see it.
Thankfully, I have a good gunsmith who made it look like new. It's also amazingly smooth.
If I'm going to buy a trade in, you can bet it's going to be stainless, and the best grade offered.

Me and some guys in my club just bought 6 of the VG condition, SB 64's.( 5 or more got us the volume discount to $199) IMHO,All were in 85-90% condition cosmetically. Grips were beat but beyond that maybe 1/2 doz total light dings and scratches's plus some "holster wear". I'd rate all we received as 98% mechanically. These guns were obviously NOT shot much. Actions were smooth, timing perfect, Cyl gap and end shake on the side of "like new". BTW, what dings, scuffs and scratches's that were there were mostly polished away with some Mothers mag polish and a few hours in front of the TV. There are a few blems left but you have to look close to see them. Added some new Houges and she's not hard to look at at all! Sorry, been meaning to post a pic but have been tied up.
All in all, I'd buy another "VG" from them in a heartbeat. Best $ I've spent in a long while.

My son and I each got a 4" NY-1 model and are very satisfied. His had Pachmyer grips with which he was satisfied and mine had pretty shabby original wood grips. Those I replaced with some real good wood ones of the correct type which I got on E Bay.
Now it's a great gun.
I too will look at the 2" ones if (maybe???) Santa does not get me one tomorrow.

+1 on J&G. Honest sellers. I'd buy the best grade if I could afford it. You'll get it back if you ever sell it and the slick ones shoot better.

I would buy the NY1 on the theory that the NY armorers would take better care of them. Mechanically, they should be fine - it will just be looks.
Get other used 64s and you run the risk of some idiot without tools or training screwing it up.

About three years ago I bought a Model 64, two inch, round butt that had been bead blasted, initals CDC on the left side of the frame. Great gun and it has one of the smoothist actions of any Smith Revolver I have.
Got it from CDNN.

DAO conversion
I'm thinking about one of the 67's they have to go along with my Mod. 15. How hard and/or expensive to have it converted from DAO to traditional DA/SA???

It's likely just a matter of dropping in a used hammer which would cost as little as $20 and 20 min or so if you do it yourself. Get a smith involved and/or buy a new hammer and your likely to run 3-4 times that. i.e you could surpass the value of /savings on the gun.

I got in on a group buy for one of the $199 model 64. It had a tag on it that said v-vg which I guess is "good to very good". It had some scratches on it but little polishing made it look much much better. It is one of the DAO and came with ugly rubber pachy grips. I added some PC diamond magnas and a black Tyler T Grip. I took the sideplate off and it had some rust/corrosion in the internals and some gunk. I cleaned off the parts and oiled it up. Stoned the rebound slide smooth on my arkansas knife stone and put it all back together.
That's about the extent of my gunsmithing skills but when I was done I took it to the range and was amazed at the difference. Slick double action pull and super accurate
$199 gun, $10 transfer
$20 grips
$20 T-grip
Total $250 and some elbow grease and I had a good looking gun, that shot straight and was fun to work on.
You could pay more for the better condition gun but if you're looking for a mini project the cheaper ones can be a fun way to spend a couple evenings tinkering with.

Test any of these used police guns thoroughly before relying on them for self-defense.
A few years ago, I bought an ex-police 3" 65 from CDNN. The gun had a nice bead blasted finish and was in excellent apparent mechanical condition. It required some very minor timing correction.
When I started shooting it, I discovered that it would randomly fail to fire. Eventually, it turned out that some genius had cut the strain screw off short so that there was less tension, but the screw was turned all the way in. The screw was replaced with a stock item and the gun is now 100%.

Same here on my M65. And it is a great shooter with 38s and .357 magnums above the 125 grain area. No forcing cones problems as of yet. I use mainly 158 hardcast lead reloads. They also do good for me in a sd situations. rz625-8
