this Chicago PD commemorative 66-1 has a left side roll mark. not sure if it was placed there to make space for the CPD logo on the right side.
it has been sold, but somewhere i have paperwork with the serial #...

sorry about the lousy pics

Can't believe I'm the first to ask....

Where did you get the beautiful stocks, what kind of wood is that?

Added a "thumbnail" link to a working version of a chart I am working on. It is spread out in areas and clumped in others so I need to work on it...

Keep them coming please. As you can see, there are a bunch of blanks right now.

My thanks to firebirdv8 for hosting the chart for me!

snw19, in regards to your chart, you have "floating hand" listed under the 66-2...what is "floating hand"???

Instead of a solid pin in the hand that goes into the trigger, it is 'riveted' into the trigger and the pivot is in the hand. Here’s those pictures.

…...........Floating…….................................................….Regular…...........

9303,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but the stocks on my Model 19 were made by Craig Spegel. They are his "better than standard" grade target stocks. They are a bit slimmer in profile than factory targets.

Regards,

Jerry

These are beautiful examples. I just got a 19-4 that I am very happy with. I also have a well-worn 66-1. I think the model 19 just has the perfect profile for a revolver.

Here's 19-2, s/n K7952xx that shipped in late 1968

and then 19-2, s/n K7943xx. Lower serial number but shipped 9 months later. Both have the relocated rear sight leaf screw (-3).

I'm new to the forum, and don't have NEAR the collectibles that have been shown here (absolutely gorgeous!), but I'll post a few pics of mine:

My Model 19-4, Nickel 4", with Eagle "Heritage" grips:

My Model 66-5, 2-1/2", with Eagle "Secret Service" grips, and Meprolight Tritium sights I installed for Concealed Carry:

How about a factory four inch round butt 19-3 circa 1970. It factory lettered as original.

I picked up this M19-4 which dates to the 1978-79 time frame, a while back. It came with mis-matched grips, which really bothered me. Forum member Gun 4 Fun was kind enough to clue me on some key details, such as the football relief and silver washers being the correct style target grip for my gun. I was recently able to find just such a set, here in the classifieds, from forum member Kuglespritz. They arrived, in the mail, today, and I couldn't be more pleased. What a great community and wealth of knowledge we have here. Thanks to all.

I really hate to be late to the party with not much to add, but thought I'd post this pic of three interesting Combat Magnums...

(Sorry, in advance, for all those that have been subjected to this pic in the past.....)

Enjoy.

The 19 and the 66 are some of the best looking and handling k frames ever produced.

On the first page, p0838 posted a 66-1 that had a recessed cylinder but the barrel was not pinned.

Found a 19-4 in the 121K0xx range this weekend. It has a recessed cylinder but the barrel is not pinned and it has a small trademark on the left side of the frame.

Here's a 19-4 that belonged to my Dad. He used to keep it in a leather holster in the trunk of his car. I'd tell him that was a big no-no what with the acids in the leather and western Oregon dampness and all. But what does a kid know? ha ha. It was nothing that a little gun oil and fine steel wool couldn't fix.

There's a bunch of beautiful early Combat Magnums on here. How about going to the other extreme?

One of the last Model 19's. 19-8, s/n CCZ57xx

All MIM with a frame mounted firing pin

Interestingly enough, despite all the changes, it still carries the same product code that they did when S&W first came out with product codes.

No matter how disappointed I am that the Model 19 was discontinued, at least it was never made with an IL

i'd shoot my mode 13 and mod 66 more often if i didnt have to worry about the forcing cone problem of the K frames with Rem. 125gr SJHP ammo.

Here is mine. The only thing wrong with it is a has a knick on the end of the barrel, but it isn't where it affects the rifling.

Default My late father's Model 19-3

Daddy bought this one new in 1976 for $190. It is a 19-3, blue, 4 inch, pinned and recessed, plain black front and rear sights with target stocks. Can any of you interpret "Special Features" D19237?

Thumbs up Wow, a great thread

I don't think I've ever met a Combat Magnum that didn't feel good in the hand. The K frame, with a clean trigger and whichever grips work for you, almost has to be one of the all time great revolvers. Todays' shooters are missing out if they don't get to try one of these.

Here are two more, a 19-3 and a 66-2. These don't get out as much as I would like, but they work much too well to ever be safequeens. Except for the stocks, the 4"er is just as it came from the factory, and makes me look like a much better shot than I really am. I wish I had been able to buy the 2 1/2" M19-3 I saw sitting on the used gun shelf a few years ago.

My 66-1 Tulsa Police Dept commemorative has the small S&W logo on the left hand side, as does yours. The sideplate on the RH side is occupied by the commemorative stuff, in this case an image of the TPD badge. Maybe your frame is an over run from a group of frames intended to be made into commemoratives?

Default New guy with a new 66 coming!

Hi all,

This is really my first post in the forum...but what a great thread to start posting in!

I started my LEO days back in 1975, and used nothing but S&W revolvers. First was a model 19 4", then a model 28 HP 4", then a model 29 4". Not long after the 29, the department standardized on a .357 revolver. So in late 1978 we got to order, at a great discount price, ...the model 66 series guns. Many guys bought the 4" guns, and many of us who worked plain clothes got to order the 2.5" 66. I went with a 4" first run of the 586 L frame as my uniform gun when I got promoted to Sergeant and went pack to patrol. It was a great piece, and came from the factory with a non-fluted cylinder. Like a big dope, I sold that one also.. Currently, I actually own only one cheap, but decent Taurus 4" .22lr revolver, which hasn't been shot in 10+ years.

I actually had two of the 66 2.5"s, and for kicks, after reading this thread, I checked in my old PD documents and found the serial numbers of both of the 66's. One was a 1978 27Kxxxx and the other was a 1980 77Kxxxx. I really loved those guns, but I sold them both, and I don't even recall why or to whom. I guess I have been having a huge bout of regret and nostalgia, so I shopped and found a great condition 1978 vintage 66 2.5" that is on its way here to me!!

I will post up some photos once I again become a 'proud owner'......There are some really great weapons shown here and some excellent photography as well..I'll try to add constructively to this thread.

Take care all,

JJ

Here is a 4" 66-1 P&R with the left side roll mark. The top revolver is the 66-1 and the bottom revolver is a 686 no-dash. Sorry for the lousy pic.....

What serial number range does this one fall in? There appear to be a bunch of them between 69Kxxxx and 77Kxxxx. Maybe from frames left over from all the commemoratives.

Here's a 99K recessed only which,as a starter, can be used as the high side of the serial number range

Default 19-3 2.5" Barrel & Magna Ported

I just bought this 19-3 at Cabelas. The salesman said it had a Metallite finish. It looks kind of like stainless steel. The other gun in the picture is a 66 with a 4" barrel and it's also Magna Ported. Has anyone heard of this finish?
