Sounds correct.

It was moved to the front, forward of the barrel/cylinder gap instead of directly over it.

Newest family member.

This one is super special. Not only is it the only one in this serial number range to have shipped in 1968 (I ain't never gonna find my 1967...), it could be the one and only Model 192 known to exist.

I will probably be regarded as a total Philistine by the purists, but my 66 is a working gun, purchased as a police trade-in, campaigned in a PPC league for a couple of years, and modified by changing internals as they wore out, shaving the bottom off the cylinder release to clear speed loaders, replacing the original 4" red ramp barrel with a 6" red ramp, and substituting the beat up grips with the S&W smooth finger grip combat grips that were popular in the late '80s and into the '90s, since that's what fit my hand.

For purposes of the serial number chart, it is a 66, no dash and the serial number is 7K707XX. It is pinned and recessed, and the original hammer and trigger, IIRC, were stamped "S" indicating the true stainless parts rather than the flash chromed carbon steel ones which seemed to actually last longer. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Thanks. Stainless rear and front sight or blued rear and red ramp front?

Good for you! Stick to you guns!

They marked the stainless parts with an "S" (or "F") to keep them separate from the carbon steel parts because without finish, they are both 'white'.

Yes. Product code 102709 was a 6" Model 66 with RB.

I don't know if any Model 19s were but they did switch over to all RB in 1995(ish) and the 6" barrel was discontinued in 1996 so it is possible.

thank you. i'll keep my eyes open for one. i want a 6" 66/19, but the square butt frames don't fit my hands too well, and i can't get myself to "modify" one.

As stated, it was a police trade-in (on a whole table of its siblings) so I picked the blued rear / red ramp front sights, which I assume were original, but may have been an upgrade, but who knows(?) I thought all SS internals would be cool to prevent (or at least slow) rust & corrosion, not thinking about the wear factor. I am now thinking that the hard flash chrome may have its place!

BTW, what if anything does the 7K7 etc. serial number indicate?

A blued rear sight and red ramp would be original to a Model 66 in the 7K7xxxx range but with S&W you can never tell so I had to ask.

The serial number can be used to date when it shipped. When comparing its attributes to other Model 66s serial numbers, we can (try) and narrow down when changes were made. For example, a Model 66 in the 7K7xxxx range should have the gas ring on the yoke, as opposed to the cylinder.

Well - I can now join in on this thread.

I picked this up on Monday from a local dealer...

Model 66-1, SN: 62K57xx, red ramp front sight, no white outline rear sight, grooved combat trigger. It came with a set of Hogue rubber grips, these magnas were just laying around.

It needs a little work, so I think I'll send it back to S&W for a little TLC - then it will be put to work, teaching new folks to shoot.

Take care,
Bob S.

I'm new here. Like 1/2 hour new ! Went quickly to this Combat Magnum thread. Like many of you I consider this model to be my "ultimate". I only have one. It is a 19-4, with 4 inch barrel. It was my daily duty gun in the early years of my LE career. Since "retiring" it from on-duty work, it has become my most carried gun for off-duty carry. I hunt deer with it and have used it to take a nice 5-point buck a few years ago. Quite simply, the 4-inch Combat Magnum is, in my opinion, the best looking, most comfortable-carrying gun for my off-duty and woods-bumming needs. I have shot this one so much that it has recently had a new barrel and cylinder installed by S&W. Next, some scroll engraving !

My model 19. Isn't as good looking as most of the 19s on this thread but I love mine. In fact, its sitting on my hip as I type

After I bought the grips so I can use it with speed loaders

Yes, welcome Bigrams! We have a lot of good S&W K frame stuff here.

And up at the range we had about 30 minutes of good shooting before the light sprinkles became rain a couple days ago. Here is my 66-2, wearing some of those hi tech Pachy Compac's. And I simply can't think of a K frame carry gun without a J frame as sidekick.

Well this looks like a great place to post a couple of pictures of my latest purchase. My no dash M-19 4" four screw that I picked up last week. This is my best purchase so far.

Bought in May for $249! 19-2, serial number K778587. Nicest gun I've ever seen.

Somehow another 66 followed me home. 1972 Stainless sight version on top, 1976 blued sight with orange front post on bottom. The blued sights were a major improvement. I shoot far better with it.

Call me late to the party, too. Here is my only 66, a 3.2" -5 model. I wish I had others to keep it company.

Wow, I'm really late to this party but here's my 19-3 snub. Best trigger on any of my handguns, bar none!

Is there a subtle difference in the barrel shroud/underlug on that model or is the camera playing tricks with my eyeballs???

Thankfully, mine are all common models. Now if only I could add a nice common four inch or shorter 66 to the family.

Any idea why some have the serial number stamped into the frame behind the yoke and some only have it stamped on the bottom of the grip frame??? I didn't remove the stock from my shorty 19 for the serial but I can if it is really needed for the project after all this time.

Nothing truly historical but I have always had a soft spot for 19's and 66's

I think because the round butt versions came with magnas (that didn’t cover the serial number) and the square butt versions came with targets (that would cover the serial number).

That’s up to you. I appreciate any info you are willing to share.
I’m on a mission to document every Combat Magnum ever made and I think it’s going to take me awhile.

In the first post you can see that the difference between a 19-2 and -3 is what ‘started’ this for me. What you’re mentioning keeps me going.

Here’s a RB 19-2. No serial number in the yoke cut but no need to remove the stocks, the magnas don’t cover the butt.

Here’s my shooter RB 19-4. I’ll have to look up the serial number because it’s not in the yoke cut and the target stocks cover up the butt.

Then there’s this ‘transitional’ 19-4 that had RB Combats on it when I got it. But, there’s no need to take of the stocks to see the serial number, it’s stamped in the yoke cut. Why?

You gotta love it!!
