The ultimate Model 19/66 Combat Magnum thread
Picked up this 19-3 today after the 10 day wait in CA.
Pinned and recessed. Target grips, hammer, and trigger.
The trigger pull is excellent. I really wanted a 2 in or 4 in but this one is so nice, and I can't seem to find the shorter barrels locally.
Had to drive an hour each way twice to purchase and pickup!

Mine looks like everyone else's (4") but I really love this vantage point. Even from this view, the craftsmanship blows my mind.

I have two Model 19's left after selling one to a co-worker.
My favorite handgun I own. A 19-2 that was made within months of when I was born.
And a 19-5 with a set of awesome smooth RB targets. It was the grips that caught my attention, even more so than a 4inch RB. I expect that it started life as a 2.5inch, maybe someday I will letter it and see. ETA: I lettered it and it is a righteous 4inch RB. Sent to the State Department to be used by embassy guards.

My first combat magnum. Can't believe I waited so long. After a bit of cleaning I installed a set of magnas I had. Now it fits me.

2K164* Slightly cloudy in a few spots and swirl marks, light scratches, but I think I'll keep it. 8)
ETA: That's the last owners grip screw, new ones on the way from ebay.

Reminds me of one of my husband's coworkers coming across a guy with a blue 6" barely fired 29-3, he said he just wanted enough to pay his electric bill, which was $200. Still jealous.

Just stumbled across this thread, and thought I'd share a pic of my only remaining 19. It's a 19-4 wearing a set of Ken Driskill;s awesome stag grips with an old Tyler T. Great handling and accurate too!

Mr Moderator: When I try to post a quick reply and Go Advanced so I
can post photos I get a bunch of previous photos instead. Is something
haywire or is it me?

Sorry to be so tardy, but here is my 2 cents worth before it's too late.
My S&W Model 19-4 P&R. Got it new back in the late 70s but don't
remember exactly when. It has the 4" barrel and is shown with Herrett's
Jordan Trooper walnut stocks. In 2006 I sent it in to S&W and had the
action slicked up. They also installed the partridge sight with the McGivern
gold bead. Continuing on left to right, it is shown with some favorite
leather:
Tauris Ranger by Mike Taurisano.
Black T3P style with dog ear by Oliver Ball.
Brill style by Mike Doc Barranti.
Seventrees by Paris Theodore.

19-3 grips?
I have a nickel 19-3 with original RB checkered target grips or banana target grips however ya call them. Some people say they are rare on these guns vs. I guess magna's. Are they for a 19-3? Oh sorry 2.5" gun? Any one know the value? I don't know how to post pics on here or I would have included a pic.

This is my recently purchased 66-1. Whoever owned it before me at some point had the action worked. It's soooooo smooth and light. Serial 60K3xxx. If my research on this forum is correct that would put it in early 1980 as it's born on date. It's my second smith and my first .357

Now I received my 19-3, had looked better in the dealer pic´s. There are some scratches on the side plate from a „Bubba-Job" ( they tried to pry the side plate loose with a screwdriver or so)
There was also an issue with the cylinder stop, every couple of trigger pulls the hammer won`t cock.
At this occasion I replaced the rebound-,cylinder and mainspring. Problem solved, now the action is smooth as butter.

@Texas Star
there is just a limited selection of .38/.357 ammo like magtech, geco,S&B and maybe Remington to buy.
ccp is almost impossible to get, so we are limited to range use.

I recently bought a Model 66 no dash, 4 " barrel with the stainless rear sight, s/n 4K9XXX. The gun is pristine with no box or papers. The Supica book puts the year of manufacture in 1973 and the value between ANIB and Exc at $700.00 with a $100.00 premium for the stainless rear sight, however it says this is for the first year and a half of production, which would be 1970 and 1971, so I don't know if I can include the stainless sight premium? Would any of the experts have any comments on this value range and know the dates that these were produced with the stainless rear sight? Thanks for any info.

Late to the party-this thread and Smith and Wesson
Here are my Combat Magnums:
19-4 4”
66 ND 4”
19-5 2 1/2”
The 66 was a $400 pawn shop find, a year ago. Came with GA N-frame smooth targets. I found these correct stocks on eBay for $70.
The 19-5 showed up at the LGS, a couple months ago. $540 OTD.
The 19-4 is almost a safe queen, having been to the range twice, in the six months I’ve had her. I thought I paid too much, but now that new 19’s are over $800, add the value of ivory stocks, I did OK at $1250, I hope.

Wow, this thread started in Dec. 2009! I only have 1 gun that fits the category. My 66-2, 2.5". Had it a little over a year. I enjoy shooting it, and my 10-5 snub. Bob

19-3 1K20XXX, 1970 production. It’s got some holster burns and scratches but is in about 90% shape. No box or papers when I got it, and it’s my EDC. 48 years old, who knows what it has seen, and still in service. Thinking about getting it lettered
Y’all seen the new 19-9 Classic? It’s like the new 66, two piece barrel, one is a 4” and one is a 3” K-Comp.
