I know this is old, but I had to add this one at least.

Model 19-8, 38 Special Only.

According to SCSW 4, there was a run of 213 made in March of 2000 for distributor RSR. That's the only information I can find on them. A lot of speculation, but that's about it.

In spite of the fact that it's marked as a 38 Special, it will in fact chamber 357 rounds, but I don't shoot magnum loads anyway.

I'll add one more while I'm kicking this back up.

Model 19-9. The "classic" Model 19. Well, we can argue over rather it's a classic or not, but I look at it as "classic" in the sense of a medium, frame 357. The gun is changed from the sweep of the frame from the rear sight to the grip, and the two piece 4.2" barrel, to the cylinder lock-up system and of course the dreaded lock. They did also eliminate the flat spot on the bottom of the forcing cone that many saw as a weakness of the Model 19.

I haven't fired it a lot, but have fired a box of 357 ammo through it, and really liked the way it shot. If there is anything I didn't like, the grips are maybe a little too narrow for my taste. I won't change them, I like my guns to look stock and as I said earlier, I don't shoot 357 ammo often, so these should be fine with 38's.

Here is my 4” 19-3.

I swapped the football grips for S&W cut-outs because that’s what I like. Target hammer and trigger isn’t necessarily my favorite configuration. I prefer the narrow serrated trigger, but it’s fine like it is.

My 4” 66 no dash has the narrow serrated trigger that I prefer.

Me too. I like the target hammer though. Not sure why other than it just feel better when cocking. More to get your finger on. Which shouldn't matter to me because I mostly shoot DA.

I totally agree on the trigger. Thinner is more natural to me.

Default Models 66 no dash and 19-4 nickel

The model 66 no dash P&R is SN 4K1617x from 1973. The white outline black rear sight and case colored target trigger may have been owner installed? It has a yellow insert on front sight. The stocks have dark color very nice grain. Very good cosmetics, shoots fine, but well used.
My photo.

The model 19-4 P&R is SN 35K949x from 1978. Nickel plated, 98% condition, great lockup. No insert on front sight ramp. White outline black rear sight. Stocks are lighter color than the 66 and don't have as much grain. Left stock is relieved, if I understand the terminology correctly.
19-4 photo by the man I purchased it from.

What did they charge, and how do you like their bluing? I’m about 30 miles from their shop.

I think about $325.00. A long wait, but worth it. Nice folks, so I'm sure they would like you to visit.
My revolver chrome finish was deteriorating from fifty years in a CPD holster. I am quite happy with the result.

Default Recent 19-3

After years of watching, I've finally joined the Model 19 club. Here is a 19-3 with some holster wear and some marks on the grips. It's a 7K38xxx serial, so it's likely 1974 or 1975 ship date. Any more info than that would be appreciated.

I've got a 19-8 and I think it's one of my favorites also. It, and yours are really nice looking guns. Mine is marked as "38 S&W Special Cartridge" on the barrel, but it does in fact chamber 357's. I've never fired anything but 38's and most likely won't. I've got a couple others for 357.

I posted about it in this thread earlier, but I had to comment because your's is about the only other -8 I've seen.

Here's a couple pictures of it with the Altamont "Ropers" I added since the original pictures.

Read thru many posts of guys collecting different 66's in regards to barrel lengths and dashes. Been thinking of trading/selling a 66-3 4"; Pachmeyer grips, no box or paperwork, but very clean, as I'd like to use it to finance another purchase. But after seeing these multiple 66 collections above I'm torn and would probably resent it after the new purchase. Around here, there sure haven't been many nice 66's for sale let alone any other than 4" or 6". Didn't have a 66-3, just a no-dash, that's why I picked it up. I've checked on GunBroker and comparable ones are ~$700 but to people ACTUALLY get that for them. At several gun shows here in IN, I've seen some 66, 19, 686 list for well over that! But wonder if they actually sell or just keep hoping they sell? Still on the fence whether or not to keep it in my collection or sell it if $ is right. Any thoughts wold be appreciated. Thanks.

I had this 66-1 but unfortunately I let it slip away. It is an original 4" round butt special ordered by the Ok. Dept. of Corrections. Someone had done a great job of customizing it, probably to hide all the scars it received as a duty gun in a concrete jungle. Serial# ANS10**, I was told by someone here a couple years ago that it actually shipped out in the '90s.

I think the market for revolvers is "softening" lately. Another user commented that sales on the forum here are slow and usually sell for less than the asking price. I checked the broker recently and a common model 66 auction sold for $600 or so. You can find many listed at very high prices, they're hoping for a buyer looking for their specific gun. I think the Pachmeyer stocks might reduce the desirability somewhat to a collector, but would be good for a person looking for a shooter. If you can do a great job marketing it and put it up as a no reserve auction, you might get a good price. As far as keeping it, depends whether you would be happier with that other item you are trying to fund!

Interesting gun, never saw one like it. I would like a 3" round butt 19 or 66 , but I guess they are rare and pricey. Is that a bead blasted frame and barrel?

Thanks for your insights Art66. I've seen a lot of private collectors at gun shows with outrageous S&W prices and not many buyers. Then I see them at later shows and they've got the same inflated prices on the same S&W ones I saw at the previous show. Think I shop this one around; it's a nice shooter but not a collector piece.

Hmm, can't recall if I've put this one here before or not LOL, that's what I get for not stopping by sooner, wonderful classics in this thread. 1978 66-1

Bad photo of my recent LGS find. 4" 19-3. Has a little holster wear on the muzzle and high points on the cylinder, but the trigger is wonderful. $499.00 was too good to pass up. Came with a Bianchi leather holster and a trigger shoe that I removed and these wooden grips which I'm not a fan of, will probably replace them with some traditional Smith grips. If anyone can ID what these grips may be I would appreciate the info however.

I have a 99% M-66-1 with both the original rubber Combat grips, and a rosewood set of Altamont grips. I prefer the Altamonts for looks. BobK

I sold my 4" 1963 M19-2.

And I sold my 6" 1967 M19-2.

And I sold my 6" 1982 CHP M68-2.

And my 6" 1980 M66-1 is a keeper.
Its not going anywhere.

Default Model 68?

rubiranch
"And I sold my 6" 1982 CHP M68-2."
Did you mean M66-2?
No, you did not. My initial search on wikipedia had no result for Model 68. Later, a google search found a result.
If anyone else is unfamiliar with the CHP M68, here is a link with the full, very interesting story.

I'll add this 3" fixed sight version that went to Germany in 1972.

Here's a few more to add to all the beauties above! A couple 19-3's (the 4" shipped in early 69), a 66 no dash with stainless rears and a 66-1.

I just picked up this 66-2 (serial X15xx) today. After a thorough cleaning, she will be going to the range tomorrow. Looking forward to trying out this magnificent trigger.

Nice 2.5" 66-2!

Sounds like the assembly number on the yoke, not the serial number on the butt.
By the shape of the shroud, it should be between ALCxxxx and BBYxxxx.

Default 1977 Mod 66

Got this in ‘07 and decided to get it engraved by S&W in 2018. When I got it the trigger looked like it was reconfigured for double action shoot like maybe for a police department. It lettered being sent to Oceanside, CA government. Since I worked in Oceanside at one point, I thought I give it it’s due.

Default Re: 1977 M66 and my 1973 M66 trigger issue

Beautiful engraving!

When first obtained, my 1973 model 66 no dash was tuned for double action. However, the single action was downright dangerously light! I had to increase the tension on the hammer spring to correct that.

I also had to correct several mechanical issues due to wear.

I worked it over with Flitz metal polish to remove the small scratches.

I'm much happier now!

Art66 - Very, very nice ‘73 mod 66. Over the years I’ve had two Mod 19s, a 6”and a 4”. I love the K frame .357s (I also love the mod 13s). But as I get older, I get and keep the stainless ones because for me the finish is just easier to keep looking decent. Had a 66-2 which I stupidly sold for what reason I have no idea except I wanted to buy another gun. Anyway I said darn it, I’m getting a 66 and I’m finally going to keep it! - So…I purchased the 66 in San Diego and the trigger had been reground to get rid of the width lower in the trigger. The sides were removed so that it was the same width all the way down to the trigger tip as it came out of the frame. Also the corners of the trigger were sharp but not cutting sharp. The upshot was once you got your finger into the trigger guard, the trigger “stuck” to your finger. That plus a great action job made it a great double action gun. The trigger plus the action made me think it was a LE gun. I was partially right, it lettered to being initially sent to the Oceanside, CA city government. - The mod 19/66 lugged barrel/K frame size is a favorite for me as is the heavy barrel/K frame format of the mod 13s. Had a mod 13-2 and 13-3 but just have the 13-3 at this time. N frames without the keyhole are high on my list.

You certainly have a unique Model 66! Thanks for giving more info on the trigger and original owning entity.

My 66 has a target trigger installed, and a yellow front sight insert. I'm guessing someone liked to target shoot in double action. The yellow insert is good in low light.

I also like the K frames. I tried a 586 L frame, but it was a bit heavier than a K frame. I also have a 4" 1978 Model 19-4 (nickel plated) in excellent shape. It is the last dash number to have a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. (according to wikipedia)

Again, thanks for sharing your engraved '77 Model 66!
