Default Need help identifying my S&W .38 special CTG

Hi...I'm a brand new gun novice looking to buy a .38 special for home protection and some target shooting. I jumped in today and bought a used S&W .38 special CTG. The gunshop owner told me it was a police issued revolver but couldn't tell me much more. It's stainless steel with a 3.5 in barrel, 6 rd. and feels very solid. I paid 325.00 for the gun, and the gunshop owner is going to take me to his gun club shooting range to teach me how to shoot it. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me anything more about the gun then the gunshop owner did and if I paid a good price. I realize this is all after the fact, but it would be nice to know anyway. I've included some pictures and the serial number is 1D932xx. Any help would be much appreciated.

That is a model 64, which is the stainless version of the model 10 heavy barrel. The barrel length is 4" as measured from the face of the cylinder. There have been quite a few of these police trade-ins surfacing in the past few months and the prices vary by condition. From what I can tell in the photos, your looks to be in better than average condition. Most of these guns were carried alot and fired very little. It will handle any +P 38 special round. An extremely solid gun for your intended purpose. The sights are a little sparse for fine target work, but once you find a load that is regulated to your sights you can hit anything all day long. Welcome to the forum and enjoy shooting your new gun.

Welcome to the forum. Your M-64 dates to 1979-80 and appears to be in very good condition.

$325 is a pretty decent price for the .38 spl. Go out and shoot it, I think you will enjoy. I have the blued version, the M-10 and a similar version as yours with sights, the M-67, all are great shooters.

The model 64 was the issued firearm of my police force when I joined up. We later went to the Beretta 92FS (M9). I wish I could have bought the 64 I had been issued, it was a very good shooter. To bad the U.S. Government does allow its police officers to purchase their "obsolete" handguns. Personally I don't believe the model 64 is obsolete.

If you open the cylinder and look at the part of the frame that is exposed under the barrel, you will see it is stamped 64, and probably has a - then another number....that is the model of the revolver you purchased...a Model 64-whatever
Model 64's are great revolvers, and far from obsolete. Great gun, good price, and you will enjoy it for years

The M64 is a good gun. You paid a fair price for it. I looked at a similar gun at the same price, less than a month ago.

Welcome to the forum.

It's an excellent gun for the money and should provide a lifetime of service. That's nice of the dealer to offer to take you to his club. You might consider joining, if the dues aren't too high and it's close to home.

Just curious. The first photo looks like it has markings under the cylinder. Does it? That may be of assitance in identifying the department it came from.

As a matter of fact, grey; you're right...WPD 80-77 is etched into the gun under the cylinder....any idea of what that means. The gun dealer said he thought it meant Washington Police Department, but he wasn't sure.

The WPD is a typical police department marking. When you see PD think Police Department. SO means Sheriff's Office and HP is often Highway Patrol. Many agencies stamped such an ID and inventory number on their guns. I have one stamped FHP for Florida Highway Patrol and another marked CCPD for Corpus Christi Police Department. Some folks collect police guns while others don't appreciate the extra markings.

Yours was used by some city PD and the city name started with W.

Congrats - I'm relatively new to the S&W scene, but I looked into the Model 64 as I was doing some research.

Like others have mentioned, with the condition of your gun, that was a fair price - most of the ones that are in the $275 price range are pretty beat up anyway and have bobbed hammers, beat up aftermarket grips, etc. So I think you did well for your first firearm purchase.

Add in the fact that you are getting a little instruction on shooting, it was a nice deal.

I think you got a fine buy for $325. It looks clean and well-cared for, and appears to have the original stocks instead of rubber replacements.

Yours has the desirable pinned barrel which many of us prefer and also helps narrow down when it was made. (In 1982 they stopped pinning the barrels for this model). When you open the cylinder, you should find "M 64- x" stamped on the frame. ("x" will be 1, 2, or 3.)

Thanks for all your input, guys; I really appreciate getting to know more about my gun and it's background. Glad I bought this one and since you all feel I got it at a good price, all the better.

After I shoot it a few times at the range, I'll be back to let you all know my first hand experience with the gun. Looking forward to that. I never realized the satisfaction owning a good gun can bring you.

Thanks again.
