I looked over the SCSW and searched this forum to no avail:
What is a "Dayton" gun?

Although there were a number of 4 inch guns made for other police departments, the Dayton guns were a special order item sold through the now defunct Dayton Sports, of Dayton Ohio...I don't believe any were for the Dayton PD...but could be wrong. Somewhere in my stacks of S&W stuff is a copy of the Dayton Sports flyer, and a scan of it was posted here, some time, ago by member Smithnut.

I'm pretty sure that run of guns by S&W had nothing to do with the Dayton PD. They were done for the owner of Dayton Gun that was on north Main in those days. It later moved south to Centerville and became Dayton Sports Headquarters, then Sports headquarters and finally Outdoor Sports Headquarters. Might have been another one in the bunch, each change resulted in fewer guns and more crossbows, fishing and camping stuff, kinda like an early "Dicks" yuck! The Main street shop is where I first drooled at row after row of Smiths, probably about the age of twelve. The name Hannin rings a bell, possibly the original owner of the shop.

I did a search on "Mike Priwer Dayton" and found a lot of info. Thank you VM.
The Dayton gun looks like a heavy barrel Model 10 with sights. Might just be the perfect .38 revolver.

As an Ohioan, and a Model 10 fan, I can only hope to stumble into one of these Dayton guns.

Stuffed into the safe among the N frames and the K maghums are a 5" K-38 Masterpiece ,and a Model 14-2 Dayton-Hanen special.
K6234xx serial # places it in mfd. in 1966.
Grips number to the gun.
Here at the 6 and 7 o'clock positions. They both shoot equally as well as my 14-3 p.p.c. gun with the Bo-Mar rib.
You'll know one when you see it. Just keep your eyes open.
This one was marked as a model 14, at a gun show, under $500.
Happy New year ,, Allen Frame

I have to chuckle a little. I had a patient 25 years ago who was in financial difficulty. He brought me a gun to sell and I thought I paid a King's ransom for it at the time. He needed help and although I didn't want it at the time, I bought it. It was just 3 years ago I discovered it was a Dayton. Sometimes you fall into things. It wasn't so much a stumble as a full face splat.

NOT correct.
The so-called Dayton guns were called Hanen Specials (not sure who Hanen was), and were ordered and sold through Dayton Gun Headquarters, Inc., of Dayton, Ohio for commercial sale.
They were four inch, heavy barrel revolvers in 38 S&W Special, with adjustable sights like the Combat Masterpiece; they were available in blue and nickel. I have seem some with standard hammers, triggers and stocks, and some with the target variety. To the extent that the Priwer article says the Dayton guns have shortened Model 14 barrels, I do not believe that is correct.
Although four inch barrels, the Dayton guns differed from the Combat Masterpiece by having a straight wall barrel, but they also differed from the regular Model 14s by having a straight wall barrel of significantly greater diameter than the usual straight wall heavy barrel of the Model 14.
Having compared them side-by-side, it looks to me like a heavy barrel from the Model 10 which has had a flat machined on the front to accept the Baughman Ramp front sight on ramp base. The top of the barrel does not have the usual grooving down its length, but is bead blasted, like the top of the Model 10 heavy barrel as shown in a previous post and picture.

I would love to see S&W send us some new ones! Maybe in 4, 5, and,6 inch and in .32 S&W Long as well (Model 16) The heavier barrel would be just right for target shooting. Clarks make a custom gun from a model 67 that is just about the same thing.

As my eyes get worse, I shoot better and better with shorter barrels. My present favorite is a 4" 15-8; I would dearly like to see a 4" 14-whatever, even with a lock and MIM (I know, I'm a heretic, but I'll take what I can get). If one can be made with a Model 10 heavy barrel fitted to a 14 or 15 frame, I might try to have one made.

Sorry, phils. I know little of Canton and only passed through there one time many years ago. I live in the southern part of the state near the Ohio River.

Here are a couple of pics of my 1957 Pre-Model-14, 4" Target Masterpiece (s/n K292XXX). This is a factory barrel as can be see by the centered position of the lettering, crown, etc. For comparison I also show my Pre-15 1952 Combat Masterpiece with the common tapered barrel.
This may be one of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Dept. guns referred to on page 144 of Supica and Nahas - Standard Catalog of S&W under Variations. The year of manufacture is correct and the fact that it came from a gun shop in Independence, Missouri lends credence; however I have not had it researched as yet. Anyway, I wanted to show the difference between the Dayton guns, the 4" Model-14 guns and a standard Model-15.

The factory letter I have from Roy Jinks states: August 1965 Dayton Gun Headquarters order for 100 units, this order was repeated in 1967 with a second group of 100 units. That is the total production according to S&W letter from Mr. Jinks. I tend to believe the factory rep myself.

Thank you Kurt, that flyer explains LOTS of the questions above, great info......as for Dayton, as noted, I think Mr Hanen was the owner, and when he later sold it to Vince Shields, it was Outdoor Sports headquarters, and then, the company that now owns Ellett Bros and others, took it over when they had one here in Cleveland ,called Brecksville Sports Headquarters ( bought out by Atlantic Gun & Tackle,) OutdoorSprts is still in Dayton???still operating...we have not bought anything from them in many years as we retired, shut down out shop in 1986, and gve up our license in the mid 1995................................... and the info for 'Phils' as to Johns Sporting Good (Buckeye Sports) in Canton,Ohio, they went bankrupt around 1993 or 1994 as the last we got guns from them ,was in 1993............hope this helps, maybe someone lives closer to them, (Either Johns OR Outdoor Sports) can "add" or fill in more info...............
as for the gun itself, we looked at one this past saturday, and the recent letters from Mr Jinks, on this one referred to the higher quantities and issues of this gun, more than two batches of 100 guns each........as well as even some later ones for some state troopers agency (department), and they were in the #1Kxxxx rangees............would have to go and reread the owners letter........he will be at the OGCA coming up soon...........

I thought I would elaborate a little on the Dayton Gun Headquarters, the owner and president was Joseph Hanen. They were modifying Ruger 10/22's in the mid to late 1960's, at the same time the Dayton S&W guns were produced. Hanen was apparently a firearms expert and was both a collector and shooter. He had an elderly woman in has employ who built all of the "Hanen Sportsman" 10/22 rifles. All of my info comes from Workman's book on 10/22's which has a small section on dayton gun headquarters, but makes no mention of other special guns produced for Dayton.

Outdoor Sports is still in business. Affiliated with Jerry's Sporting Goods. Bought some items prior to retiring my FFL in 2008. See link http://www.jerryssportscenter.com/Locations.asp
Maybe I will run into you at the upcoming OGCA.

Yes, indeed . . . it is a Dayton gun that shipped in August 1965. Thanks to fellow Forum member BigLarry, I have replaced the well-worn grips with a correct pair of diamond PC magnas . . . thank you Larry.
Some cleaning and the better stocks make it a pretty presentable example of the "Hanen Special".
Note the distinctive thick barrel wall and thin, non-serrated barrel rib.
