Model 66 no dash birthdate
I recently purchased a S&W model 66-4" no dash. I was wondering if any body on here could help me with the manufacturing date.
The serial number is. . 9k97097
I gave$325 for the gun, was also wondering if that was a decent price? I have a couple of S&W auto pistols. . (5906 & 1339). . but this is my first Smith and Wesson wheel gun. Also purchased a 442 the same week, couldn't resist for$300. It doesn't weigh nothing, and the wife loves it.

Looks like late 1976. I'm going to guess it has black rear sights and not stainless? (only the very early one's had stainless). A few things to check would be lock up, end play, and for the 66's always check the forcing cone for excessive wear or damage.
If it is in good mechanical condition and not beat up cosmetically then 325 is a good deal all day long IMHO.
I have several 66's so I have a soft spot for them.

Locks up tight as a drum. Forcing cone doesn't seem to show any signs of damage and its clean as a whistle. Previous owner had the hammer bobed so its basically DA only, but that's ok because the trigger action is so smooth.
Thanks for your input

Congratulations on the purchase and yes that's a very good price that you got it for.

Those look like round butt Hogue grips, if so it has been rebarreled or the grip frame was rounded. Have you pulled the grips to look at the frame? Also looking closely looks like possibly a Magna Port rework seeing the ports on the barrel.
At that price & in the mechanical condition you describe that's a great range/fun/personal defense revolver. Congrats!
Are there any markings or manufacturer's name on the sight rib?
