OK, you win. No more customized 58s
What a bunch of whiners you guys are;-) I've decided to sell my last Model 58 instead of having Bowen work his magic. Two 58s and two 520s from Bowen is enough for anyone so I need your help in determining fair market value. The gun is in 97% condition cosmetically and 100% mechanically. Nice tight B/C gap, superb comeup, very smooth DA and nice SA pull. No evidence of extensive firing. I'd guess a low to moderate round count. Comes with model correct rounded magnas NOT numbered to the gun, no box, tools or papers. Not a collector's gun but a very, very nice shooter. What should I be asking for it? I'll have pics up later today, but frankly all you'll see is a superb example of a 58. If I don't get a good price, off to Bowen it goes. Just kidding.

That reminds me of the pristine Model 1950 4" in 44 Special for sale for $3500. Quite a difference from what they went for new in the the early 50's. Just makes me weep.

The market seems to support prices around $800 for these things - or in excess of that. I suppose if you want one, there are only so many and all that, but I can't figure it out. It's a gun no one wanted, until the internet came along.
On the other hand, when you look at the prices of new production and compare what you get, then the $800 or so price seems...

Saw one with pronounced rust sell in the classifieds for $600.
Last one I saw on GunBroker was very nice and brought $1,200.
I'd put it up for auction starting at $1,500 and see what happens.

I presume, since this is a 58, it's a 4" barrel? (Did they make any other barrel length in the 58?
Other than the fixed sights, is there any difference between a 57 and 58? Both have equal-quality finishes, don't they? It's not like the Hwy Patrolman that had a duller finish compared to a 27, is it?

He couldn't sell at his outrageous prices! Sold mine, a pristine nickel in 85 for 225.00 IMS and been kicking myself in the arse ever since.

You are correct. Mod 58s were only made with 4" bbls.
Same finish as on the Mod 57, but no ramp front sight, no adjustable rear sight, and no ejector rod shroud.

Thanks Malysh,
I knew there was something else about it that I was forgetting - it's the lack of ejector rod shroud.

What did you have Bowen do to your other 58s? He does amazing work, I have a Redhawk he worked on, but it's nothing fancy, just a nice hunting revolver.

While I understand why some folks would be bent out of shape about modifying M58s and M520s, I can also appreciate why one would do so. Now that I have old eyes, I will do any such projects on M28s, I think, just because it easier to put big bold sights on them. I have an M58 which has been modified for my needs (old eyes), and since I never plan to sell it, I don't care about a loss in collector value.

I've attached a few pictures of the 58 and the guns Bowen has done for me. For those that don't know about my project with Bowen, my goal was to create what I think S&W should have done with a fixed sight Fourth Model Hand Ejector; specifically, to provide a barrel shroud (vice what they did on the 58), a straight taper barrel (like on the Model 29 & 57), use a service hammer and serrated trigger at .265" width and change the front sight profile by using a steeper angle to the serrated rear face (much, much better sight picture). The only additional change was to ditch the factory grips and go with Spegel Extended Boot Grips. I chose Coco Bolo (red/black) and Makassar Ebony (black/brown). The calibers I selected were three standards: 45 Colt, 44 Special and 41 Magnum; and one oddball, 45 S&W. For those of you not steeped in history, back in the late 1800's and early 1900's S&W had an unspoken policy. Colt guns would not have S&W cartridge nomenclature and S&W guns would not have Colt cartridge nomenclature. Not an inviolate policy but it did contribute to 45 Colt being rather rare in S&W guns for a long period of time. I chose 45 S&W as an experiment because I'm a professional handloader and happen to believe that cartridge has a lot of practical potential. So far my tests have proven my original assumptions to be entirely correct. It equals the 45 Colt potential across the board within the pressures N frames can safely handle. However, its only real advantage over the 45 ACP is when you want to use heavy bullets. My tests so far show that a 225 RNFP bullet, its original weight when first designed, is a very nice bullet at a wide variety of velocities.
These are three of my four Bowen custom Fourth Model Hand Ejectors (from top 44 Spl, 41 Mag, 45 S&W):
Here is the 45 Colt before the custom Spegels were fitted:
For those of you still interested in the Model 58 I have for sale just contact me at [email protected].

I guess anything is worth what someone will pay for it, that being said, I think it's an 800 dollar gun. Seems like you have to compare it to a model 28 and it would take an awfully good 28 to bring 800. I love the 41 mag, have a 6 inch model 57 that's like new but 800 is plenty for a 58 IMO. But, it's worth what someone will pay.
