Considering trading my Highway Patrolman..
I have decided to get my CCW permit soon, but I realize that I do not own a good CCW handgun. My only handguns are an old Beretta 92F and my 28-2 HP, both of which are big and heavy. When I bought the 28-2 back in February I was actually in the act of purchasing a S&W 49 when I spotted the HP in the same case. Since I am currently a 40 year old broke college student, retraining after 16 years of driving 18-wheelers, saving up and buying another handgun is not an option right now. Textbooks are absolutely ridiculous in price!!!
Any thoughts or ideas from the members here are appreciated, since I can't decide what to do yet.

I say sell the beretta 92F and keep the model 28. Since there still being manufactured you can always buy a replacement beretta later. The model 28 is not being made anymore so finding a replacement for it would be a much bigger challenge.

mg357 gave you great advice. I don't sell many guns but if I did I would be inclined to sell the one that is easiest to replace.

I agree with them; I have a 92FS and could get another one any day of the week. But I don't have an HP and could not get my hands on one if my life depended on it.
Not sure what an HP is going for, but it's probably only a couple hundred more than you can get for the 92. There is a Beretta Forum that you could check out.

Besides, IMHO, the 92FS is a better choice than the F model. You can replace the Beretta later with a better model. The 9mm has its limitations. .357 has limits also, but I think it much more capable than the parabellum.

I don't know what type of handgun you plan to buy for concealed carry as I think that's what would dictate what you need to sell or use for trade material. I think in your situation you should trade whatever you need to to get what you need for personal protection. If that means the Model 28-2 needs to go then make sure you get something of equal value or what you want and a little money if you have the big end of the trade.

Highway Patrolman/28's are getting harder to come by, so I'd keep that one and sell the Beretta. The HP is money in the bank.

Although I like Berettas, any model in any caliber can be found without much searching. In my opinion, I'd sell off the Beretta and keep the Smith.

The problem with dumping the Beretta is the amount of personal history in the gun. I bought it from a co-worker in 1995 and owned it until 1999 when I sold it to a local dealer. I found it again, at a gun shop just down the road from where I sold it, in 2008. Same firearm, same serial number, looking just like it did when I sold it 9 years before.

I'm already a member there.
Good advice so far, guys!
Edit: I didn't think about the ease of replacing the Beretta until I looked at Gunbroker. There have to be 20 92Fs for sale today. Y'all might be on to something....

Well while HPs are definitely scarce or getting there...I have to second fyimo...if you find something that you like and have to sell the Smith, go for it. Find what you will absolutely carry where ever you can at all times possible. If you can part with the 92 then do so. Just me, stay safe.

I'm with fyimo on this one. I've sold guns in the past that I loved or at one time or another thought were irreplaceable in order to finance purchases of something else that I needed more at the time. You need to decide what's really important to you and then, make the best deal.

I would sell the 92, put an add up here and over at THR for the Beretta or try to sell locally (your best option.) Your Smith will be a desirable gun soon enough, walnut and blue, pure class!!
The Bodyguard (49) is a good concealable choice with the ammo available from Buffalo Bore and Double Tap. IWB or on the hip they all but disappear. This of course is my opinion and to be taken for what it's worth.

Being someone who has previously sold and then searched to replace a firearm I have sold, as you have with the Beretta, I say this: Keep BOTH, and use one of them for your carry CCW purposes; scrimp, save, and economize to come up with the funds to obtain your NEXT preferred firearm but DO NOT sell or trade what you have. That's my opinion, you asked for it and you've got it!

I agree. You can carry that Beretta or HP if you buy a QUALITY Inside Waist Band holster and belt. Both are excellent self defense weapons in calibers and parts that are easily obtained (especially the 92). That Beretta could come in handy if there was a need for lots of firepower without reloading such as a hurricane or natural/unnatural disaster and looters are out and about. Saw that with my own eyes when Isabelle came through N.C. in 2003. With the right slightly larger shirts for the summer, Columbia Fishing Guides are my favorites and a jacket for winter you can make either one dissapear and still be rather comfortable. I packed a 5" Springer 1911 for 18 years undetected and I'm 5', 7"'s tall at 170 lbs., so it can be done with realative ease and comfort. HBE Leatherworks, TT Gunleather and Ray at Lobo holsters can get you going on rigs that'll last a long time and will hide them biguns with comfort. You can't beat Rays prices of the 3 and they are quality custom holsters. You could then start saving for a used and smaller S&W revolver or semi of your choice. A nice 66 snub would be a good choice as it's small, accurate, packs a punch and has one extra round over a J model. It's also easier to shoot more acurately and faster than a snub with the better sights, grip choices and weight. As much as love my S&W's I mainly carry a Colt Commander with 2 extra mags these days for SD and the S&W's for outdoor activities. Went to packing a 66-2 snub for about two months, but the Commander with it's extra firepower and faster reloads kept calling my name so it's back on my hip in it's old TT Gunleather IWB. Mainly as I shoot the platform much better than a revolver from many years of competing, qualifying and carrying a 1911 since I was 19. Both of your two weapons are well made, reliable and would protect you well. Hate to see you suffer another case of sellers remorse if you let either one get away.
Hope my ramblings helped and good luck on your quest.

While neither is a pocket gun, they both can serve CCW duty with proper holster and belt. I can highly recommend Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake Simply Rugged Holsters for the N frame.

I have had to sell stuff before, and it is hard to do and hard to buy them or duplicates, later. Keep in mind that you can get a 442 or 642,
brand new, PLUS, a Mika's pocket holster, and not get near $500.
Hard to let go of something with personal history. Good Luck!

I have to agree with fyimo - what you will be picking up will dictate what you're going to have to sell. However, for me, I would do anything I could to keep the 28-2. A decade down the road you'll realize even more and more the quality of that revolver. Best of luck in leafing through all of this wisdom - these guys are great and honest, aren't they?

I'm 6ft 1in, 315lbs, what they call here in TN a "big 'ol boy", so I could carry either. The summers here are very hot and humid, and I can't see concealing either with just a t-shirt, cargo shorts, and flip-flops. This got me thinking about a smaller, lighter handgun for everyday carry. The thought of strapping on the HP or Beretta for a quick trip to the grocery store just doesn't compare with the thought of slipping a snubbie or small semi-auto in a pocket holster. I used to have a Detonics Combat Master, which was the same size as a .38 snub, but much heavier, especially loaded. Droopy drawers if carried in a pocket, for sure!
For carrying the 92F I bought a Milt Sparks VM2 left-handed holster a few months back. It's easily the most comfortable holster I've ever carried the Beretta in, but it's still a big honkin' pistol. I used to carry it in a Kramer IWB or horsehide Vertical Scabbard when I owned it years ago, but that was before we could easily obtain CCWs here, and I just took my chances. Oh, to be young and stupid again....
I haven't made up my mind about anything yet, and the 28-2 is sitting in my lap as I type this, keeping me company.

I say keep the HP and the Berreta and get a dedicated carry gun. Maybe something in a lightweight polymer frame bottom feeder.
How many times have you seen "Sure wish I hadn't sold that gun?"

With the proper belt and holster, the Model 28 or the Beretta can be CCW.

You've got a couple of good options. You can list the HP here in the classified section for sale/trade and you will probably come close to getting a fair price or trade. If you aren't set on a semi auto for a carry gun perhaps someone here will trade you a K or J frame snub +/_ the difference in the two guns value. You can always place an ad in your local area and sell the gun. Just don't trade it with a gun dealer. They have overhead and will not give you the value of your gun. They can't because they have to turn a profit and you want that money in your pocket.
The HP is a desirable handgun and depending on condition will probably sell for enough to get you into a good, used carry gun. The guys here can help you arrive at a fair market value if you need help.
Let us know what you end up doing. Good luck.

Been buying/selling/trading guns here in middle TN for 20 years, so I know not to do that. I even have a family member who owns a gun store right up the road where I get "family" prices on stuff, but I know he has to make a profit so I sell elsewhere.
I have a Comp-Tac belt that holds my Beretta up well, so it would almost certainly do fine with the HP.

This is why this forum is so great: guys will talk you off the ledge! You gotta look at the big picture. Sure, you can get a newer 92FS at some point, but it will have all the cheesey plastic parts that beretta owners usually replace anyway (I know I did and I am a long time Beretta owner and member of the Beretta forum). I got an M9 and couldn't stand the plastic trigger and guiderod. So replacing your true 92F won't be as easy, especially if the one you have is in nice shape. The HP isn't made anymore, and depending on it's condition, you will either not replace it or you will replace it with something of lesser value. You will probably get more for the HP, though.
I stumbled on a pristine 19-2 4" a few months ago and nearly stole it for $249. It is so nice that I will never carry it and will only shoot it sparingly. The blueing is like a mirror and the diamond targets are perfect. I recently considered more than doubling my money by selling i. Then I stopped and asked myself "how is this $500 gonna make my life better (it won't), and will I ever be able to get another pinned and recessed 19 in such nice condition, especially for $250?" Nope. So it's staying. I hope my son wants it one day. If not, it's getting buried with me!
Spend some cash on a new 642 if you want a convenient carry piece. $400 isn't gonna break you. You'll regret selling either of those two guns.

Sir, keep them both and carry the Beretta. The 92 hides surprisingly well with a good inside-the-waistband holster.
JMHO, FWIW.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

You can get good money fo your 28-2 and a small gun for CCW can be had for much less

Peddle or trade the Beretta for the model 49 you wanted in the first place. Just sayin'...

Ok, lets look at this from another route. Keep the revolver in .357 and get rid of the less powerful 9mm. With the .357 you can do everything from shooting the lightest .38's and in the Model 28 you can shoot the hottest .357's out there without worry in breaking it. That's versatility you can't get with the Beretta. When the weather starts to cool off here, my carry gun is my 27-2 with the 3 1/2 inch barrel, not much different in size than you're 28. I carry it all day long in a SimplyRugged holster with no issues.

If I had to pick one or the other, I'd pick the S&W just because it's a S&W. That said, I carried a 92FS for some time in a CrossBreed Supertuck IWB holster and it was just fine. In fact, it surprised me how comfortable it was. Having the larger ammo capacity was nice. I'm a large guy so this probably facilitated the larger carry gun better. Just my two cents worth.

From a guy that has carried from for 45 years---not that that makes me an expert/bad dude or anything special. It just means that I have tried a lot of ways to carry--some outstandingly stupid and uncomfortable.
I have found--for myownself--that a flat semi-auto is the most confortable & concealable.
I have found that I prefer to carry the 1911 cocked and locked inside the waist band---without a holster.
If I carry the PPK or the .38 snubby in my front pocket--I do it without a holster.
If I carry any revolver, I do it with a duty styled belt and holster (mine are tooled 3" belts and fitted holsters--high ride)--riding high under my arm.
The onliest way that you can figger it out for yourownself is to put it on---on a day when your going to be home--and see what works for you.
Don't ever trade a gun---DON"T EVER TRADE A GUN---you will always regret it.
Blessings

Probably going to keep them both and carry the Beretta, as it's finally cooling off here in middle TN. Maybe I should hold a bake sale or lemonade stand, if not for the fear of being shut down by the cops for not having a $500 "permit" to have one.
Thanks guys!!

Hound the councling dept. re money/books and any financial help available. Get used books when you have to buy them. Sometimes there is very little difference in the "new eddition" they want you to have-where there are cahanges-take the advice of the previous poster and Zerox. I don't give advice, but I would sell the 9 and buy a light weight-inexpensive revolver-charter- taurus, etc. and hide the rest of the money for when you have to have it if it wasw me. Flapjack.

I'm going to be a jerk and ask why you are even wasting your time worrying about this gun nonsense when you have career retraining to accomplish. CC permits cost beaucoup bucks, too you know? Forget the carry permit because you can't carry the gun on a college campus, anyways. And exactly how big is the threat to your life and limb? You're a man of decent stature?
I have a carry permit, I simply do not get the carry permit craze business. For people who live or work in dangerous areas or who have to deal with dangerous idiots day in and day out, by all means, carry a weapon. Does that description fit you, though?

People carry weapons to give themselves security. Your life can be threatened outside of the city. And I hardly think posting a message on a forum is "worrying too much". My carry permit was $25, not beaucoup bucks. He wants a carry permit. We should be encouraging him, not criticizing him.

I'm not some pimply-faced kid straight out of mom and dad's house. I'm a forty year old man who is re-training after a career doing some pretty dangerous stuff over the years. I carried back then, without a permit, but I want to be able to legally. The cost isn't prohibitive in Tennessee, so I think it is time to get my CCW permit.
Sadly, the world is a dangerous place. Three National Guard soldiers found out the hard way this week that even a meal at IHOP can be deadly. I'm a big believer in tipping the scales to my advantage in any way possible, and being legally armed is only one way.
I'm through attempting to justify it any further.
Good day, sir....
