Factory S&W boxes from gun store that has been closed 30 years

Well I have acquired about 300 gun boxes from a Texas gun shop that went out of business in the early 80's. There are prob at least 100 to 150 revolver boxes. All revolver boxes are RUGER, SMITH & WESSON, or COLT. Some of the Ruger boxes are still in the shipping sleeve and the yellow box on the inside looks has all paler work and looks new. Lots of the S&W boxes are the two piece some are solid blue and some are darker with silver trim. Most all of the boxes have ALL paper work . I think all of the one piece boxes have paper work, insert, cleaning kit. There are not many colt boxes. There are also 100 to 150 long gun boxes. Browning (some are Belgium boxes), Remington, Winchester and Ruger rifle boxes. I need to know if anyone knows where I can find research info. I am going to sell them all but know very little about them. I have looked on gun Broker gut it did not help me much. I think I might have some boxes that might make some collectors very happy so any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks

When you sort out all the info and decide on a price, PM me and I'd be interested in 2 or 3.

murphydog 01-09-2010 02:26 PM

It will be a bit of a chore, but I think most people would be interested in the information about the gun for which the box was made - model number, barrel length, and letter prefix/serial number. Also, the color and condition of the box plus any goodies inside.

For S & W, the best reference is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition, it has a pretty good box summary. You will definitely have a lot of interest in these, especially the older boxes. Prices will vary widely, about $15-20 for a modern/common one up to a few hundred or more for a nice older box with all accessories and paperwork. Good luck!

HAWKEYE10 01-09-2010 03:01 PM

:) You can sell them in the classified section of this forum.
I think they would get a lot of interest. Also Ebay is a good
place to sell them. Don

My suggestion would be to sort them out by barrel length then take a pic of the top and end label. Some of the older ones had the name of the gun, caliber and barrel length printed on the end label of the box (ex. Highway Patrolman, 357 magnum 4" Barrel) Some boxes with papers and tools will go $50 and up so don't short change youself. I have seen the tool kits go for $35 and papers for $15-$25. Take pics and post them here that way we have a better idea of what you actually have and will give better advise. Some boxes go for big bucks. If you price them fair they will not last long as collecting boxes are just as much fun as collecting the guns that go with them, or putting a gun that someone has back to the original configuration.

I think that you could probably sell alot of the S&W boxes right here to members of the Forum. Many of us would be interested in picking up a box or two to match some of our revolvers.

You will definately make more if you sell them individually in the Classifieds section of this Forum or on GunBroker, E-Bay, etc.

I wonder who bought all the guns without their box and paperwork?

Many gun shops decades ago sold guns out of the display case and customer could have cared less about the box or contents.
There have been numerous such stories about boxes getting thrown in dumpster years later and still not being "collectible" like they are on todays market.

I got first dibs on the 2 pc M19 Combat Magnum and 1 pc M37 boxes. Any chance you have a bobbed hammer for M37 in one of the parts boxes?
