S&W's L-frames would be closest in size, the 586/686 in .357 Mag.

I say. Buy a 27 3.5 and never look back.

Here here to the 2 1/2 model 19. And with the right holster- very concealable.

You guys are voting for what S&Ws you like but not answering the man's question, and possibly confusing him. He wants to know what S&W model(s) is closest to his 2.5" Python in size in .357 Magnum and the answer is the 2.5" 586 or 686.
The 27 is quite a bit larger than the Python and K-frames are that much smaller.

The Python was built on what was the.41 frame, and the S&W L frame is closest in size to it, and both can use many of the same holsters where as a k frame holster is initially very tight for both.....and an L frame is an improvement over the k frame magnum fwiw, and it's "Distinguished"...... :->

Tom. Agreed. I own a 4 inch python and yes a tad smaller than the 27 3.5 in weight. I feel it's much bigger than a 686 in my hand anyways. So I have to agree with half. The 586 would most resemble the python. A 586 2.5 inch although rare would be a perfect comparison.

I think the big vented rib on the Python barrel makes it look bigger (and possibly feel a bit heavier up front) than an L-frame but the actual frame sizes are very close.
Here's a photo I found on Google:

In size, the L frame 586-686 is a very close match to the Python.
In quality, the Model 27 (that is a direct line descendant of the original .357 Magnum) is the flagship for S&W. It's counterpart from Colt is the Python.

In the 6 inch comparison, the 586 is slightly heavier than the Python.

Way better looking! I don't think so. I like my 586 but my Python is the better looking gun.

Naw...that silly looking vent rib coupled with a small bore hole in the end make it look awkward to me. Pretty blue though.

I love the Python.
That doesn't mean I'd sell my 586 for all the tea in China, though.
L frames are sweet shooters, and affordable.
The reason the L frames are called "Distinguished Combat Magnum" is because you can still distinguish (feel) your hands after shooting a couple of boxes of full power .357 ammo through them.
As opposed to the K frame .357s which aren't exactly heaps of fun to shoot with hot magnum ammo.
Not really, but that's MY reason.
As much as I love my 66-1, my 586 is a much more fun remote-control drill (Sorry, Mas, I ripped off your term) for shooting magnums.
The L frame .357s are a joy to shoot.
I need a 6" 586 to keep the 4" company.

Closest SMITH and Wesson is the L frame. However, if you are interested in a used gun try and handle a Dan Wesson 15/715 .357 magnum with the 2 1/2 in barrel installed. Prices are usually reasonable and the action and accuracy are both excellent. I have a hard time adjusting to the front cylinder latch but that is the only thing I ever found to be an issue. Generally speaking, a Python, L frame and DW will all fit the same generic holster.

Side by side photos
Here's some photos of my 2.5" nickel Python beside a 2.5" 686 (combat grips), then a 2.5" 66 (magna grips) and finally for size comparison of an N frame, a 3" 625 (in 45acp).

Definitely don't overlook Dan Wessons.
Fantastic revolvers.
As a kid, I thought they were ugly.
Then, I shot one.
