I also believe that the majority of the late Model 27-2 guns had nickel finishes. When they were new in gunshops and sporting goods stores, I saw three nickel guns for each blue one, and they weren't around long before the non P&R guns replaced them.

I lucked out and found a new one in the wood presentation case, with r/r and w/o sigts, nickel finish, s/n N760740. I bought it in June, 1998, when large frame .357 carbon steel revolvers were thought to soon become a dead deed.

I'd trade my nickel one for a blue 4 inch M-27-2 in the same condition.

It kinda makes sense to produce more nickel versions from the standpoint that they look fancier since the 4" Model 27 was competing against the less expensive 4" Model 28 in the same display cases,
Likewise guessing S&W opted not to offer the 28 in nickel as a regular cataloged item so it would not compete against the 27.

Also interesting that S&W had been selling the Model 66 since 1970 but never offered a SS version of the Model 28 and didnt get around to making the Model 627 until 1998 .

Here is another 4 inch transitional 27-2, S/N N 885902, like
the one JC Elect posted, barrel not pinned, but charge holes
recessed.
I have not seen very many of these.

I didn't have this one when this thread was alive. Got it from a sweaty handed dentist that carried it into the Orlando show in a paper bag like a sandwich. He was fixing to trade it away for a Glock until I gave him the Glock price + $50 fer it. Win-win. Joe
