I like to offer shops a price similar to what was around before obama stirred up the country. Offer them $450. Nickel is not the most sought after and lacking the correct grips is a hit. You did not mention box and papers. Does not sound like a pristine collectable package.
It is not the best of guns to use or carry and is not in a super collectable configuration. Tell them everything that is wrong with the package and offer a low amount. Use visable cash, it talks fairly loud.
$450 out the door, let them pay the tax. They probably gave some guy $300 for it.

What is it marked ?
They are running $600.00 + in my
part of the world.
If it is at shop I doubt a $450 would come close.
It will bring $600 + on-line or at a show.

I would go with at least $600 maybe more for a 4" 57 if a no dash. The grips as you know can be found for $50 and I would not let that affect the sale. Yes I agree cash talks but I doubt $450 and they pay the tax will cut it.

PackN.
I live in Yuma Az, right on the border, in a very high unemployment area. There are more S&W's for sale around here than there are buyers. Some very good ones have sat on the shelf for 2 years at a very high price.
A couple of the stores are waking to the fact that the gun buying craze is over and it is a buyers market. N frames are worth about 500 and K's are less. There is a nice complete 15-2 for sale for 295 and no takers.
There are panicked and greedy buyers that will overpay just to get one, but it not a good way to buy things. Our local economy is tanking and folks are dumping old guns, to include S&W's. There are 24's 25's and 27 , and 29's for sale in local market. If the local stores won't take a low price they can sit on the gun for another couple years. The economy is not on a road to recovery and stores have bills to pay.
One more time offer a low cash price and see if they will deal with you. If you are in a well off area of America they might not. You may live in a competitive market. I don't.
Just because a bunch of lemmings is willing to pay last years outrageous prices is no reason for you to start there, start low.
My town is full of winter visitors, godddamnsnowbirds, they influence the economy. They dump a lot of guns here. I offer my local shop a price for a S&W and if he refuses he knows I will be the only customer this summer when the birds leave. I told him I would offer him less in the summer. I don't have problem with driving the prices of guns back to the preobama panic prices.
You can pay whatever you want. Guns are not going to inflate at a great rate for a while. Collector quality packages will go up, shooter grade stuff can and is coming down if the blasted shooters would quit being greedy. 700 for a 95% nickel 57 with rubber grips. BS BS BS
Save your money and buy quality. 99% with all the goodies.

I don't know but just two weeks ago here in El Paso at a gun show I bought a like new Mdl 57 6" for $475. No box and the only detracting blemish was you could see where the previous owner had put a clamp on scope mount (?) on it and the dealer I bought it from had used some touch-up blue on it. Just a week before that I bought a Mdl 657 3" w/15 boxes of Winchester 210 gr LSWC for $800. At my local gun store they were selling the ammo for $26/box plus taxes so the ammo alone was worth over $420, so the gun was about $380. I agree with RDRBILL offer about $425 to $475 and see what happens.

Let us know okay

Yesterday, I saw a NIB Model 57, complete with Hillary Hole, at a local dealer's for $900. I forget what the dash number was - it's the new "Classic" model.

PackN, I'd be interested in what you paid for those 58s. I'd love to have one, but all the ones I've seen were around $1,000.
