To align the hammer nose so it doesn't flop around?

Due to the hammer arc in relationship to the opening in the frame for the firing pin, S&W made the pin movable to self align as it enters the recess in the fame that it protrudes through to strike the primer.

I have never seen such a spring on any of my smiths, but I have never
removed a hammer mounted pin either. They seem to be designed to self align. The Digest book of exploded handgun drawings shows this
spring to be a feature of N frame guns but not K or J frames.
