Very Cool round butt M&P - I'd guess 1949. The grips are from the 1920's

They look aftermarket to me, I see scallops at the front and back of the checkering pattern and the top looks different too.

Agreed. Maybe they were added when the gun was refinished.

The gun had belonged to my grandfather, who passed in the sixties, dad sent it to Smith late sixties early seventies to have it reworked and reblued, they lost it and offered him any other gun. After much ranting they, Smith, miracously found it and returned it. It has sat on my uncles shelf since, until it was given to me this year. So the story goes.

What is a M&P, would'nt the serial # help with the year?

M&P = Military and Police
1949 is approx. from the book as the only way to prove when it left S&W Factory is to pay $50 for a Factory letter from the Historian.
Thanks for the better grip picture - those are neat but as Chad/Drew mentioned they are aftermarket and not original.
It's neat that you have this revolver passed down from two generations to you.
