Default serial number question (not mfg. date)

I have a 1976 era S&W 18. The last digit of the serial number (located on the frame on the bottom of the grip and below the crane) is a 1. On the one under the crane, it's clearly been stamped over with a D, with the original 1 forming the vertical stroke of the D. Any one know what this means? I looked in the SCSW but couldn't find anything. Does it signify anything, like the M after the serial number on factory upgraded 686-0's and 686-1's ?

Thanks in advance.

What you describe is completely unfamiliar to me. I know frame markings can be corrected by overstrikes, but why a last-position serial numeral would be converted to a letter is beyond me.

I remember something about a letter D being used to indicate a duplicate serial number. Can someone help us out here?
