I brought out my 3.5" model 27's yesterday to see if there was one in the bunch I was willing to let go in a trade I was working on. I think I have to keep these.
The three on the left are 5 screw guns. The three in the middle are 27-2's. The two on the right are 27 no dash. The round butt gun and the one with the fake ivory's are a bead blast blue. I think they look sharp.

Very nice! It's not easy to acquire a collection of 3.5-inch 27s like that in California. I'll bet you did some driving!

My third 3-1/2 inch 5-screw arrives Friday. Is there any hope for me, or, am I destined to develop the full-blown syndrome, as you obviously have? Please, is there any hope at all???

I finally joined the club a month ago with this 6" Model 27-2. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as M 27's go, but it is a sweet shooting gun.

I like the fact that you have accumulated these nice 3 1/2" S&W 5-screw, 4-screw, and 3-screw N-frame revolvers. Good work. I wish you would make a picture of each of them!

You are missing a Model 27-1 3 1/2" .

Nope...no hope at all. You just need to embrace it...and start posting photos as your addiction grows.

A "Model of 1950 Pre-27". Dates to 1952 per factory letter. 3+7/16" barrel. Excellent mechanical condition. Wear at the muzzle, the front of the cylinder and frame below the barrel, as well as some blotching of the finish on one portion of the cylinder indicate it was carried a fair bit.

Very accurate; shoots as though it was new.

I have had a 27-2 like that since 1979. Bought it new for $325. A lot of money for me at the time. You will keep yours too.

^^^ Yes, it was a lot of money then. I bought a new Colt Python in 1981 for $440. That was a lot of money for me too, and I had a good job.

Time to bump this back to the front page by posting a few images of my newest 3 1/2" 27-2 I got last month. It's not unfired, but rather very lightly shot and in extremely nice shape. I picked it up the day before I had to leave for the rig, so I still haven't had a chance to get to the range and give it a go.

It sitting in the presentation case, which is in excellent shape:

My oldest and my newest. The 5" I bought new in 1974 and put in the the pic with my newest model 27.

Finally, I also got the original silver box with it, with tools still in the plastic as well as all the paperwork the pistol came with in the box. All in all, a nice package deal I thought.

Default Best Thread?

On this forum, quite possibly? A big "Thank You" to all of you for sharing both pictures and information. One week ago I held a 4 in. 27-2, circa 1967 to 1972 in my hand. It was in good to very good condition. I have been obsessing about it ever since. I should have bought it, but I prefer permission to forgiveness and I am almost there. I have today off, many plans, but a visit to the LGS is on the agenda. If it is still there I win, if it has sold I win.

4" 27-2's were in production from 1979 to 1982....

Thank You Leatherhead23! I know nothing about 27's, except that I love my S&W 25, which I bought in the late '70s or early '80s and the 27 I'm interested in is $895.00. Any thoughts or opinions with essentially no details?

As you know....condition is everything. There were more nickel then blued 4" 27-2's...but they both bring about the same money.

$900 sounds like a great deal if it's nice...pristine condition examples have sold for $1200-1500 recently. Hope that helps.

It has been a long time since she shot the 25, if she soots well, and it is hard not to with the 25, I might make my move. Thanks, Bob

I hope you win on the "it is still there" side. The model 27, to me, is the nicest looking gun in the S&W line.

Bought 4 S&Ws two days ago, two of them are 27-2. The 3,5" was made 1969 and the 6" 1978.

I might have to move to another thread. Bear with me I have been married a long time and I play a "long" game. Honey has been an avid shooter for only 15 months. On Wednesday she really enjoyed herself and the S&W 25 at the range, it had been about 10 months, and many thousands of rounds through other various firearms, since she had shot it last. She made some great observations regarding its trigger pull/feel, in both double and single action and enjoyed it. We spent the rest of the day doing fun things, but didn't make it to the LGS. Thursday morning was sunny, cool and breezy, perfect for taking the dogs on a hike. After the hike we had had enough time before work to visit the LGS. It was still there, but my brain had messed with me, it was a Model 28-2! So for the last week I have been trying to learn about the 27-2 and of course in the process learned a great deal about the 28. Honey got to handle the 28, operate and dry fire it. Jason, who is on our side, let her handle and dry fire a 6in stainless Python as well. She also handled and admired, but did not fire another, as new 40 year old blued Python. All in all I have moved the ball cleanly down field. We are shooters first and foremost, so both the 28-2 at the shop and some unicorn of a 27-2 out there somewhere are still in the running. Picking between the two seems to be a common issue. I am still very interested in the 28 at the LGS because its condition is outstanding, but I feel less of a sense of urgency since it is not a 27-2 at $895.00. Thanks Everyone.

Nothing out of the ordinary about this one. Typical 1978 - '79 vintage 6" 27-2 with smooth targets. Like any 27, just a great shooting gun.

Best regards,

IMO the two most beautiful box stock 27s ever made.

I should have added this one a while back.

27-2, 4" from about 1980.

It came with a presentation case that needed reflocking, with the cleaning rod, brush, etc.

Default 27-2

This is a 5", RR, W/O, with Keith Brown stocks. It's an S s/n, came new in box to me several years ago, plus exhibition display box and diamond target stocks. It isn't NIB any more.
