Can't you get someone in the U.S. to order the letter for you and the mail it to you when they get it?

Just picked up this 27-2 3.5" on Thursday. It is an S prefix serial numbered gun dating from approximately 1964-1965. A little bit of holster wear but the smoothest action ever.

A Pair of Pre-27's
Hello
I came across this First Year 1935 Registered Magnum at our annual S&WCA Meeting a Little over a Year ago in Troy, Michigan where the Theme of that meeting was on "Registered Magnum's". I have never seen so many Registered Magnum's in one setting before, and more than Likely will Never again. The One shown was shipped on December 13, 1935 to Bowen Brother's Hardware Company of Augusta, Georgia in care of Charles Bowen with one box of .357 Magnum ammo sighted in at 25 Yard's Point of aim hold, and is towards the last of the 720 Made that very first year.
It is said, that this gun It was Purchased by a Captain Rodgers U.S. Army while he was doing active service close to Augusta, Georgia since it was Purchased from his son David prior to me Purchasing it, from a S&WCA Member. The story went that Captain Rodgers had very small hands and the gun did not fit him, so the Lower grip frame was cut and a Piece about 3/8" Lower frame steel was removed, along with the back strap moved in and of all things Brazed back into Place. Evidently, it ended up in California where Captain Rodgers lived after his tour in the U.S. Army. It came to me with a set of Rubber Pachmeier's on it that covered up this sickening cut and welded frame issue.
In the condition it was in, it would not have been safe to fire, as the braze welding job was cracked so it was my decision to have it Put back to the way it should be, so a Piece of 3/8" steel was placed in the lower grip frame area and welded into Place, and the Back strap was brought back to where it belonged. There was also several Deep Teeth serration's left on the back strap and fore strap of the gun, from when the frame was cut and the gun was Placed in a Jawed vice while doing so, that this damage too had to be repaired as well...
The repairs were so extensive to make the gun whole again, after all the machine work was done that it had to be Re-blued. The Polishing process done before the bluing was placed & was all done by hand not Machine to prevent weakening the factory stampings or dishing out the side Plate holes. I am Pleased with the result's of taking this gun from a Previous Wall Hanger Conversation piece, back to a useable Enjoyable gun again. The Target Grips shown on it are period correct Walter Roper custom shooting grips that I had for a while awaiting the right gun, and to me, they look right at home, and Period correct on it. It also is shown with a set of Period correct service grips that were given to me by a friend for a Birthday Present Last Summer.
The second gun is the Grandson to my Registered Magnum. It is a Pre-27 with Original Factory Nickel finish. It shipped in March 1955, and has The Three Target features as shown. It is said that in the Pre-27 series Nickel guns are extremely hard to locate as they made very few with that finish when we compare them to Blued guns. I had looked ten Long years before finding the example shown, Nickel Pre-27's do Not Pop up Often. The Presentation Case it is shown is was Modified by me. It started out as a Factory 4" Presentation case, but had to be cut down for the 3-1/2" Barrel to fit in it correctly. I Re-flocked the case once I made the alterations, and have all the correct Paperwork & Tools with it Including the hard to find Knurled Nickel handle sight adjuster, and Test target Provided by the factory back then. I shoot and enjoy both of these .357 Magnums as well as they should be....

I have several M27s. What I would like to know is there a table or a scale that shows which barrel length is hardest to find. Thanks

Gee, I'm ashamed to even show mine.
My first one from 1971 was a 83/8".
Sold it as it was too long for a back-up hunting but did do the "coup de grace" on my first deer with a rifle in 1972.

A FEW TO ADD
Hello All
Well here are few to add to this thread along with some leather. Now I will grant you they surround this time frame. So far these are the ones I own,yes they all get to the range. From left to right 1. .357 Magnum 3.5" from around 1951 time frame 2. 27-8 Lew Horton 3.5" Registered Magnum 3. 27-9 4" Nickel 4. .357 Registered Magnum 5" shipped November 5, 1936. I have checked this thread off and on, thought I would add to help keep it going.
Thanks Rusty

This Model 27-2 is my favorite of the many S&W firearms I own. Shipped in September, 1978, it has all the bells and whistles and is in flawless condition.

Hello Peter
I appreciate your kind words. I had Ford's Custom Gun refinishing in Crystal River Florida do the Broken Grip frame repair and then they Placed their Master Bluing finish on it. This Gun was Prepared for it's bluing finish all by hand as to Not round any corner's or dish out and side plate screw holes as we often see when over polishing with a Machine is done. They are True Craftsman and Treat each gun as if it were their own. My wife and I Visited their facility a couple of years ago to meet them and thank them for such a nice restoration on my Registered Magnum & Here is a Picture of Master Gun Smith Horace Booth Owner of Ford's custom refinishing with his Nephew looking on, as well as a Picture of their Grandson Travis who assembles and work's on customer's gun's as well. All of the employee's are relatives who Take much pride in their Craft. Don't hesitate to call them if you need your gun's repaired they certainly know what they are doing. Regards, Hammerdown

What kind of grips are those on the 3 1/2 gun? The bottom of the grips looks very narrow.

Hey boykin...Good eye...Sadly they are Cokes that were apparently shortened by a previous owner. Although I would certainly personally never do that to Cokes, I must say I like the way they look and feel. Whoever modified them at least knew what they were doing.

My first LE gun, a 4" Model 27-3. Bought it brand new for $285.00 back in 1985 or so. Still shoots great.

That is a very sweet gun! Those early M27s are really nice.

My wonderful 27, dating to around 1960, I bought in 1963. I quickly added a white outline rear sight, and the target Cokes. L.L. Bean had to custom make the sheepskin case as their largest model was too small for the 8 3/8' bbl. A real tack driver and my all-time favorite gun........
