I am a little late to this 27 party, but I guess better late than never.
Here's one of three beautiful smiths I snagged at a local gun show. It's a 27-2, which came with original magnas. I am still looking for a 3.5"

Here are my 2 model 27's I have, both 5" barrel models:
First up is the first pistol I ever bought when I turned 18 in 1974. It is a nickel 27-2 that I paid $200 for new. It originally came with magnas, but I recently installed these football targets on it to see how they feel.
Left side:
Right side:
My second model 27 I bought a few months ago off of GB. It is a 5" barrel 27-3 made in 1985 and is 1 of 2501 pistols commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 357 Magnum. It is still unfired except for the 3 test rounds that S&W shot in alternate chambers.
Left side:
Right side:
Presentation case for it:

I recently added yet another Model 27 to my collection, bringing me up to 3. This one is one of the "12 Revolvers" set and is a 6 1/2" barrel 27-5 made in 1990. An oddity for it is the fact that even though it was manufactured after S&W quit making recessed cylinders as a matter of course on their magnum revolvers, this one does have a recessed cylinder. Anyways, here it is:

I'm lovin' those 4" nickel guns here, there can't be too many of those around. My one and only is a 5", from around 1972.

I don't keep them if they are not exceptionally accurate….
I have owned most barrel lengths in the Model 27/627, but have sold many because they did not compare (in accuracy) to the ones I kept….
my one exception is the unfired PRE-27…..
Here is the MOST accurate…..also the oldest…..
a very close 2nd….one of the newest…..
and its companion….
another variant that is SOOOOO Cool…..and just as tack-driving…

It may have the wrong front sight, aftermarket stocks, some scratches and such...But it's mine and I like it! 27-3, and what a shooter it is.

Got a gorgeous set of unrelieved smooth targets...Goncalo Alves I believe. I thought, a special set if stocks deserves to be on a special gun. So they are hanging out on my 27-1 6" for now.

My Latest 27.......
I picked up this 27-2 off GB a few months back. It had an 8-3/8 " barrel with a bulge in it at about 6" I pulled the barrel, picked parts on Ebay & GB & turned it into this.
The barrel has a couple of what look to be vise-grip teeth marks. Aside from that, it turned out pretty well. It shoots absolutely fantastic.

Hi,
Your post is a few years old, so you may no longer have the 27-2 in the picture. If you have, I wondered how much play your cylinder has (sideways and front to back) and how much room there is between it and the barrel. I have one pretty much the same age (1975 I think) and well used. It appears to leak a lot of gas sideways. I'm suspecting the extractor to be somewhat worn giving too much play.
Would appreciate your help.
regards,
Robert

Wow, Robert, there are over 350 posts in this thread going back almost 6 years. It would be helpful if you address your question to a specific member/poster, or ask a general question about acceptable cylinder/barrel gap and "sideways" (rotational?) play.
I just checked the cylinder gap on four of my S&Ws with a set of automobile feeler gauges:
15-8 .010 goes, .012 no go
19-3 .008 goes, .010 no go
28-2 .006 no go
29-2 .006 no go
Others will chime in and tell us what the factory spec is; I have no idea but you can see there is considerable variance in my specific firearms. Edit: I did a bit of research. Apparently, .010 is at the top end of acceptable gap, but still within factory specifications. Note that measuring should be done with the the hammer at full cock. And .006 was the smallest gauge I had so I don't know the actual measurement on the 28 or 29.
Get a set of gauges and check the gap on your revolver. Obviously, my 15-8 is a newer model and probably has more rounds fired than the other three. It was a police turn-in and shows significant wear. The 29 is probably 95%. The 28 was carried by a deputy sheriff for 20 years but also shows little wear and was probably not shot much.
As to sideways/rotational play, all four of my guns have some slight movement with the 15 having the most. I have no way to measure it accurately. Also, all four have a bit of front to back movement if pressure is applied to the cylinder and against the exposed end of the ejector rod.
Google Cylinder Gap and you'll get some good information
Don't know if this is helpful, but it's the best I've got. Here's one link:

What a great long running thread!
Here are a few I've been lucky enough to add since this thread was stated.
Sequentially numbered blue 5" pre 27's, one shipped in January 1951 and the other in February 1951. I got lucky when bought them almost two years apart.
3.5" from September 1951
6.5" that shipped with targets on March 3, 1955
and my most recent addition - 8 3/8" which shipped in January 1956

Here's a photo I took a few weeks ago. I've gotten a couple more and a pre war 3.5" since. I need to take a picture of a new wheel.

My model 27-8 Performance Center Lew Horton, 8 shot five inch. I know it's not old enough, hope you don't mind.
