Posted this in a different post but it's relevant here so here goes:
Hi guys. While on the way to hunting camp on Sat. I stopped at Grice's gun shop in Clearfield, PA. PA's largest gun store. It's a tradition to stop in. Wife and I bought a few items, holsters for the 586 and the 4586, a reloading tray & some flip up scope covers for her deer gun. I had one of the sales guys take out a used 686 for me to try with the 586 holster and when he did tucked far away well hidden in the back of the case was another Smith that caught my eye.
I asked him to look at it. It was VERY VERY VERY filthy model 10-6...heavy 4" barrel & square butt with wood magna stocks. All the cylinder flutes were coated with GSR and the top strap and bore were filthy. Clearly someone shot the heck out of it and never cleaned it. Suprizingly the mechanicals were spot on. Stocks had seen some good wear as well.
THEN I saw the price tag...$269.95...I don't think the words "I'll take it" could be uttered that quickly. SO to the dismay of my lovely wife (who thought I was crazy, wait she still thinks that) it found it's way home to a safer better place in my safe!
After many soaks in CLP & a generous use of Hoppes #9 and a little Ren wax it's been resurected. My wife was amazed. It cleaned up SO well and I found the stocks are numbered to the gun. Single action has a hair trigger. Double has a slight hitch but I think it will turn out to be a GREAT shooter. It balances so well in my hand. I LOVE the heavy barrel. I have not been into Model 10's before and I was pleased to find out they have a rich history and are known as great shooters.
Orignally I had planned on cleaning it up and flipping it to make a few bucks or using it as trade fodder. Whelp the lil bugger and it's 4" barrel wormed its way into my heart, I think we'll keep it and shoot the heck out of it (ONLY we will actually clean it). It's the first and only 4"er in the collection.
Thanks! Will provide range report & pix when I can.
Have fun and be safe.

Thanks for the kind words. The revolver is loaded with those same rounds right now.
Dad is 78 now....when I see him he still handles that Model 10 like it was still on his hip....a real lawman's gun.

This probably qualifies as an "ugly" example for some people, but I like to think of it as having lots of "character".

Thanks all. I have been looking at a 4" Model 10-6 heavy barrel. This thread has convinced me to get it unless it is already gone when I go back. If it is not gone, my gun fund will be bankrupt again.

Ah, a chance to show of my one and only model 10. A 10-5. C prefix, I guess early to mid 1960s. Closest Smith I own to my birth year.

I bought my first Mdl 10 last August and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The only reason I don't shoot it a whole lot more is because I have a Mdl. 14 tack driver that is my go-to paper puncher.
Looking at your photos, I kind of wish mine wasn't so perfect. I'd wear it in a holster at the range if it already had a little wear on the barrel and cylinder.

3" tapered barrel
Cool thread! Does anyone have a 3" tapered
barrel model 10? I heard Smith made a run of 3" for France with a tapered barrel. That
would be a perfect carry piece.

Yes it's parkerized a kind of gray/green color. It may actually be two-toned because the cylinder is a shade or two darker than the frame when it's oiled. Long term it will probably end up being reblued if I can find someone to dovetail the barrel for a tritum sight.
A couple of my nicer 10's are pictured previously in this thread, this one will be a project gun...

Yesterdays find
Found this 66-67 vintage 10-5 yesterday serial # C8769xx with numbered grips.

I have no reason to believe that it was ever owner shot. I had no choice but to bring it home. What would you have done?

My 1970 Model 10-5. Passed on to me by my first FTO (Field Training Officer). Issued to him by the department in 1971.
Carried it until his retirement in 1996 and was passed on to me after his passing in 2011.
On Feb 24,2011 I reported for my last duty day with the department. And went on Traffic Safety Patrol as my last shift with it in my holster. As one of "The Bosses", (I retired as a Captain) we could carry any approved wheelgun or semi auto.
It felt good and comfortable on my hip. Same as any good Smith does. I stopped at the State Patrol barracks to say my goodbyes to the Troopers I knew there and they were astonished that I was carrying that old Model 10 on my last day.
I had no doubts that if I needed it, it would do the job.
