Default +P question

I have a Mod. 60 and a Mod. 40. The Centennial is an early model. Is +P okay for either of them on a limited basis? I wonder if the stainless holds up better to +P ammo. Thanks for the help.

An early model Centenial would not be heat treated for +P ammo. It is likely a small amount would not hurt it, but I would go for the non+P loads in that. Federal still makes Nyclad if you can find it, that would not be bad at all.

I agree with the above. They're not going to blow up if you shoot +Ps in them, but wear will be accelerated. How old is the M60? Later ones can handle +Ps just fine. If you don't know, tell us the serial number and we can tell you.

Ammunition to go had Federal 125gr Nyclad non +P for $34.95 in 50 round boxes. That's a perfect load for your Mdl 40

P@R Fan; Here are the numbers for two Mod. 60's. The older one is #AYN 20XX. The newer one is a Mod. 60-4, #BNF 56XX. I think the newer one is okay for +P rounds. Thanks for the help with this.

Default I was going to pose the same question

I don't want to hijack someone else's thread , but I picked up a Model 38 today and intended to ask the same thing about +P.

My little Smith is "Mod 38". There is no dash. SN3954**. It looks as if it has never been fired. Can someone please tell me when it was this made?

I suppose the +P info would be the same as for the OP.
Thanks

No gun is "heat treated for +P" since +P is loaded below industry standards for the caliber. No special tempering is done or needed. If it says 38 Special on the barrel it will shoot +P without any problems.

My practice and carry load for my M40s is a 125 JHP clocked at 1,100 FPS from the 2" barrel. This is far more potent than the +P at 925 FPS which I consider fairly weak and impotent. So far, no problems with this load that came from a reloading manual published before lawyers took over the gun industry. It was safe in a good gun then and it's safe now. Factory +P is safe in any quality made gun.

Stinger, the older one is a late '80s gun and the newer an early '90s. Both should handle +Ps just fine, but I personally wouldn't overdo it. Most of us that have carried older steel J-frames know S@W said not to use +Ps, so we sighted 'em in with them, shot them occasionally and did most shooting with standard pressure stuff.
Mike, your Bodyguard was born in 1976. As an Airweight I wouldn't use +Ps. Once again, it's not going to blow up in your hand, but it's not a good idea.

I give up.

The +P myth has defeated reason and logic.
