Default Model 10-6 with +p ammo?

I recently got a model 10-6 in a trade deal. It has a 4" heavy barrel and target grips. It's in great shape, with the finish about 98%, the action smooth but tight, and the barrel nice and sharp/clean. It shoots great, too. I love fixed-sight S&W revolvers. This one groups around two inches at 12yards firing double action off-hand in a rapid string. My question is, can the model 10-6 handle a modest diet of +p ammo? I don't want to shoot the +p stuff often, but I might like to carry this revolver when light weather clothing prevents me carrying my N-frame 22-4. I would want to be able to put twelve or eighteen rounds thru it occasionally just to keep in practice, and use standard 38special fodder for the more frequent and higher round-count shooting sessions. It is not marked +p on the barrel, but it certainly feels pretty robust. I'd appreciate a verdict from the experts so I don't damage the thing. I've got a set of magna-style pearl grips coming for it this week, which will make it more slender for carry.

Thanks

You can shoot +Ps in it all day and be fine.

Explore the Buffalo Bore standard pressure .38 Special loads. The 158 grain LSWCHP and 150 grain hardcast WC are ideal for that old workhorse.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to order a few boxes of the Buffalo Bore stuff. I like slow moving, heavy chunks of lead better than fast moving, lightweight chunks of lead. It's good to know the +p stuff is okay, too, but give me a heavy bullet with a wide meplat and I'm a happy camper.

Thanks again.

Congrats on finding a great gun! Plus P's won't hurt it, either in "modest" amounts or a glutton's diet of them.

Your 10-6 can handle any +P ammo. And you do not have to baby it. I had a older Model 15 combat masterpiece and use to shoot the +P LSWCHP round all the time. I have a little later version of your model 10 and shoot any +P round. You will love your new revolver.

Good luck,

Glad I found this post. Bought a Model 10-6 last month and decided to load it with Lehigh 140gr Xtreme Penetrators. At the time I didn't realize they were +p rated and I was concerned. Thanks.

Your 10-6 is a strong, robust revolver. It will handle any and all factory-loaded .38 Special including +P and even the .38-44 equivalents being loaded by Buffalo Bore and others. Enjoy !

Reply #8 dug this thread out of the coffin it peacefully rested in for 3 ½ years.

Some how no one wrote that for decades S&W literature has written that +P .38 special is fine in all their steel K frames that are new enough to be stamped with a model number. Many members believe S&W is over cautious but that hardly matters in this thread where the inquiries are about model 10s.

Are you all crazy????!!

+P will blow a K frame S&W to the moon! Everyday we hear about dozens if not hundreds of guns being blown to smithereens by factory loaded ammo that they recklessly sell to anyone with the money to buy it. Despite all the thousands of guns being destroyed the ammo companies keep making and selling this dynamite!

Help spread the word about +P. It's much too powerful for any gun.

+P is WITHIN Saami pressure limits and a model 10 K frame can shoot these continuously no probs a all. If you have heard about guns being destroyed 'every day' it certainly can be attributed to something besides +P loadings. The 'K' frame is a strong, modern gun.

PERHAPS you have heard of the .357 mag 'K' frames like the model 19 that couldn't hold up under heavy .357 mag fire. No kabooms, though, the revolver would just shake looks prematurely.

True dat...

Litlle known fact is that the destruction of Hiroshima was NOT caused by an A bomb.
It was the result of a dim-witted Japanese soldier who unknowingly loaded his captured S&W M&P with some early plus p ammo. Sayonara baby!!

He's joking, bro. SaxonPig is renowned as the amateur scientist who did an experiment definitively proving how extensive use of +P ammo is just fine in K-38s. The thread here is worth seeking out.

The Titanic didn't sink because it hit an iceberg, someone mistakenly shot a plus p round thinking it was a flare, and that was all she wrote.

Seek out a 10-6 chambered for .357. Problem solved.

Does this also hold true for a model 64 which I just purchased. I believe the 64 is the same as the model 10.

Welcome to the forum.

Your 64 has a K fame the same as 10s. It has a very substantial margin of safety firing +P .38s. You, your kids and your grand kids can all fire +P .38s through it until the cows come home.

I doubt S&W went to the trouble of heat treating 64 cylinders differently than the 66 .357 cylinders they were making at the same time, but they might have.

Thank you on both counts. I am new to the modern gun models. My experience was in the pre 1898 Civil War models. Colts and Smith & Wesson. Also thank you for the good information. The 64 shoots great with the 38 special but as a side arm for hunting I thought the +p might be a better option or move up to a 357 model 66 or similar.

As you know, compared to most deer rifles a .357 is still a very low powered gun, but lots of deer will be taken this fall with bows and arrows. A .357 is a lot more than a bow but the classic big game revolver is a .44 magnum. .44s will always be a great choice, at least for reloaders or people like you who also have a revolver that fires less expensive practice ammo.

Before buying a hunting revolver check your hunting regulations.

Sorry if I mislead you. I live in New York where the Handgun laws are rather tough. I have been hunting for a long time. I use a PSE Bow for Archery, A Remington 700 30.06 and a Marlin 30-30. Some friends have started target shooting and I have had some issues with nuisance coyotes where I hunt. Because of this I decided to get a Pistol license and decided on a S&W 38 as a good all around model for target as well as backup while hunting.
I thank you for your honest and sound advice.

I told you guys I would do this when I saw more debates on the +P in postwar revolvers issue again.
So I guess you just wanted the laugh. Here you are:

+P+P+P+P+P+P+P+P+P+P+P

Titanic, Hiroshima, blown S&W guns. . . this thread made a good Friday into a great Friday.

Saxon Pig certainly surprised us. We usually get a post about how +P is barely hotter than the standard pressure 38 Special of yesteryear. Now this. . . .

Hilarious!

I am glad to see that folks have not lost their sense of humor.

I love Jack's "beating a dead horse get tiring" picture also.

Thanks everyone for making my Friday enjoyable!

I have a S/W 637 airweight and it is rated for +p but in this light gun they are very uncomfortable to shoot much at one time.(seems like it would enjoy cracking a finger or two).... I suggest if just shooting for the fun of it, shoot regular .38 specials...If the situation dictates, I'd rather crack a finger than have my head cracked...

Good stuff! My first Smith&Wesson was a model 10 4" heavy barrel. It was a police trade in that I got for $169 about 25 years ago. Still one of my favorites. It's on my "never sell" list.

For backup, with the main issues being nuisances like coyotes and human predators, the .38 with a standard velocity or +P SWC will do just fine if you do your part. While I rarely carry a revolver for serious purposes, my K38 loaded like that would be satisfactory in your setting (and better for me cuz my eyes need the bigger sights). I would be surprised if your PP will be approved and issued before the hunting season is over. Mine (upstate) took most of 6 months as I recall, 35-ish years ago.

I heard that the only person who can safely shoot +P in a model not so marked is Chuck Norris....

I already received my PP. It took 13 months from the original paperwork. As for the front sight I put a drop of bright red nail polish on it and it made a very big difference. Especially on a black backdrop target. Thanks for your thoughts.

Jeez. Where are you located (county)?. The way I paint my front sights that need it is with a toothpick and some model paint, mostly because I am a clod and using a brush makes a terrible mess.

I shoot +P's through my 10-6 whenever I buy a new batch of carry ammo. I shoot a cylinder of it to make sure it works.

I am on Long Island - Nassau county. I just have a steady hand and use multiple coats lightly. I try not to glob it on..

Oh, that explains the time period. Jeepers. At least you have more coordination than I do - if I did what you do I might as well use a spray gun.

Never dismiss the value of a 6 year old thread to a new member. I joined the Forum last year when I bought a Police Model of 1904, Forth Change which left the factory n June 2, 1925. I learned a lot from the Forum as this was my first revolver. Recently I purchased a Model 10-6 that was an Atlanta PD trade-in. Of course the barrel just says S&W 38 Special. The seller said that it was OK to shoot +P but I wasn't sure until I found this thread!

Default 10-6 and +P, nostalgia

I just found this thread and appreciate the confidence expressed. My chrome 10-6 was purchased new in the 70s upon the advice of a friend who knew better than I. It has always been stored well and is nearly new. Several years ago I stocked up on ammo and didn't notice a few boxes of +P in the stack, but now see it's fine.
To those lamenting a subject repeating over time, understand there are always new folks needing to learn and ask questions. I see the same impatience in auto forums, but thanks to those that provide answers.
BTW, just noticed this is Post #38, honored!

Welcome to the forum! I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. I can't understand all the lamentations either. You'd think that if a grown man opened a thread and didn't like the subject, he would just move on. Sigh … looks like we have some "groan men" here.

Just a note -- if your M10-6 is in factory original condition, the finish isn't chrome, it's nickel.
