Default K.H.P stamped model 66

I was at a local pawn shop today and they had a model 66 in pretty good condition. 90-95%. I asked to look at it and the guy handed it to me. It was a P&R 66 or 66-1. I can't recall off the top of my head. Anyway, it was stamped with K.H.P. Does anyone know if the Kansas Highway Patrol used these guns or not? He also had it marked $495 firm. The guy I was talking to told me to come back tomorrow with $400 and he was pretty sure the owner would take it.

They may have.

S&W did make a Kansas Highway Patrol commemorative but that was a 66-3.

I finaly found some info.

1940s

Smith & Wesson .357 magnum
revolvers purchased

1950s

• Smith & Wesson .357 magnum
revolvers use ends
• Smith & Wesson .38/44 heavy duty
revolvers with four-inch barrels

1960s
Smith & Wesson Model 10 heavy barrel
.38 special revolvers

1970s

Smith & Wesson Model 64, .38 special
revolvers (first stainless steel guns Patrol
used)

1979

Entire inventory of handguns traded
in and replaced with Smith & Wesson
Model 66, .357 magnums, stainless
steel, four-inch barrel. This came about
after the KS Legislature was made
aware of the Patrol’s inventory of aging
revolvers.

Snakeman 32 - good catch on the KHP revolvers info; thanks for posting it. Good luck with the cash offer.

I believe that the Iowa State Police also used the Model 66 during the same time period.

The KHP traded in their Glock 21s earlier this year. I was fortunate to get one.

webley,
I got one of them also. I should have bought two but I didn't. As far as I know they just traded them in for newer ones.

Iowa State Police

1976

Smith & Wesson Model 66 issued

1980

•State Patrol bought new Smith and Wesson 357 revolvers, model 66-1.

1982

•The Patrol purchased Smith and Wesson 357 revolvers, model 686.

1993

•Smith & Wesson semiautomatic 40 caliber handguns issued.

Weeeeellll.... I'm no expert and really don't know anything... and I don't want to ruin the Internet anymore than I already have... but I think (note I said "think," meaning I do not claim to know for sure) that KHP has to mean either KS or KY (am I missing any other K states?) and since the gun is in KS I would bet it's a retired KS Highway Patrol gun.

But don't quote me on that.

Please don't buy it (or sell it) based on my shaky information.

I apologize if my comments have in any way caused anyone's bubble to burst.

Snake: I regret not getting a MHP Glock 22 when they were available, just didn't want to get into another caliber. .38/.357; 45ACP and 45Colt was enough to keep track of.

I carried a SW 66 no dash in mid/late70s when I was a LEO. Got the 66 through a department buy, I kept my Model 15 though.

SaxonPig,
No bubbles bursted here. I guess I really didn't think it thru when I was writing it. I was looking for the years that they carried them. I should have been more clear. I had been up for almost 48 hours when I wrote that.

Default NOT Kentucky

K H P - likely Kansas Highway Patrol.

Kentucky State Police is the title here in KY.

$400 seems to be a BUY price for a Model 66, with or without the marking.
