Default A Model 28 shows up at the range - OMG!!! Then there's a M36....??

Maybe OMG! You tell me.....

I have a very dear friend, she's like a sister to me, bugs me constantly to go to the range. We went yesterday. I know she has a large .357 Magnum and a J-frame but that's all I know. So, we un-case the guns........whoa!

Query - her model 36 is stainless, no dash. She bought it 40 years ago, when she was 18 (that's what she says - did the law allow 18 year olds to buy guns back then? I can't recall.)***

I should have paid closer attention to it but I didn't.

Comments?

=====

On to the bigger gun - I haven't seen this gun of hes in years. Same story in re buying it (for 250 bucks) 40 years ago. ***

I took one look at it and my jaw dropped but I don't pretend special expertise in this so I'm telling y'all to see what the heck she has.

Model 28-2. 4" barrel. Pinned. Recessed. Serial number N11066. On the left side of the barrel it says Smith & Wesson and on the right side of the barrel it says .357 Magnum and Highway Patrolman. ALL of the barrel markings are IN GOLD.

Is this OMG or something that was commonly seen on Model 28s back in the day?

There was gold fill paint back in the day one could use to fill in the lettering.I bought a Colt a few weeks ago that still has gold lettering on the slide A Model 28 shows up at the range - OMG!!! Then there's a M36....??
The j frame,if it isn't a model 60,is probably nickel or an aftermarket hard chrome.Nickel has a yellowish cast.

July 1970, fits right in with her timeline.

No, they were not. This can be removed, I believe by using acetone, but I am not 100% sure on that.

I never see cool vintage Smith and Wessons or anything else at the ranges I frequent. Just tons of black polymer semis. I suppose they do show up from time to time but now when I'm around.

Regarding the gold lettering, I have a High Standard Victor that I bought new in the late 70s. The lettering was gold but it has since all come off with the occasional cleanings that I have given it over the years.

This made me think. Let's talk weird gun laws for a minute. I see you're in Texas. I'm in North Carolina. Here's what's legal here:

A person must be 21-years-old in North Carolina in order to purchase a handgun from an FFL dealer. This is after they apply for and receive a permit to purchase from their county sheriff. That costs five bucks. You can get as many permits at one time as you wish, although some county sheriffs limit it to three.

But...when a person is 18-years-old in North Carolina, they can apply for and receive a permit to purchase. Again, there's no limit on the number of permits. Then...then they can legally purchase a handgun from a private individual!! The seller just accepts the purchase permit and the money and that's it. They may do a bill of sale if they feel like it. But no 4473, no nothing. The paper trail stops dead right there.

How weird is that?

Ps-s-s-s-t...don't tell anyone in Washington about this.

Your friend does not have a model 36. It sounds as if she has a model 60. Which is the same type/style revolver, except it was made with stainless steel, not the standard carbon steel. Both are 5 shot J frames.

Here the legal age to own a handgun is 18 and you don't need any permits. Federal law only allows FFLs to sell handguns to those over 21. Only thing you need a permit to own in MT is fully automatic weapons and that's a federal law. You also need a permit to carry a concealed weapon upon your immediate person in towns. An 18 can be issued a concealed weapons permit.the same way anyone else is. Clean record and something like a hunters safety class and your good to go.

Old Bear, I know the difference between a Model 36 and a Model 60. I looked at the frame - it said M 36. My first M 36, long gone, was nickel. I gave it to a friend many moons ago. This gun did not appear to be nickel but, you know what, it was old and well used - I didn't check the serial number. It would have an N, right? Stay tuned.....

Note that in your original post (which I edited for brevity), you state that the Model 36 is stainless. Old Bear was right in that it wasn't a 36 if it was stainless. But now you're talking about nickel.

The stainless version of the 36 was introduced in 1966 and was called the Model 60. If your friend's revolver is stainless, it isn't a 36. If it's nickel, it can be a 36.

Well, regardless of the model numbers being discussed, there is nothing there that I would regard as an "OMG" situation. Just sayin'.

The "OMG Factor" may just be the simple fact of revolvers showing up at the range. I've remarked several times on the fact that when I take a revolver to the range, I'm the only guy there with one.

MEA CULPA!!! I admit it - I didn't pay enough attention to the J frame. I was more impressed with the Model 27, which I thought was something special with gold letters until y'all disabused me of that notion.

The Model 36 (I can read - it said 36, not 60) was not blue. I thought this was exceedingly strange but then diverted my attention elsewhere. Someone suggested it might have been chromed - very possible. Then it occurred to me that it might have been nickel - and the more I think about it the more I'm convinced it was just worn and tired looking but probably nickel - BUT I PROMISE to recheck it soon and report back and if I was totally wrong, dumb, and idiotic I will SAY SO! Howzdat?

Pictures would certainly help us to understand what your friend has (please feel free to inclue any pictures you may have of additional 36s she may possess).

TYPOS TYPOS TYPOS......

It was a Model 28. I have a Model 27, and I think more of M27s than M28s. TYPOS TYPOS TYPOS. I know the difference between a 27 and a 28. Just like I know the difference between a M36 and a M60. Typos typos typos....

For the record, because y'all insist on the humor and it's funnier than you think, this woman is like a sister to me - she is extremely athletic, runs every day and who knows what other exercises she is involved in like weights, etc., and has ZERO BODY FAT or close to it. Pay attention now - like virtually NO BODY FAT. Anywhere. I'll presume you follow my drift on this subject......

We like humor. And for some of us, the sillier, the better. Say, you hear the one about the chicken...
