Default NIB no dash model 57

My grandpa has a NIB blued model 57. It is in the presentation box which is in the cardboard box. He's never fired it, but he's kept it oiled...too heavily. Over the years the oil has broken down the blue lining the the presentation box. Now the lining is sticking to the parts of the revolver including the grips.

What is the best way to clean up this mess?

Best way to fix the mess is sell the whole shebang to me at a good price
OR--Email Joe Cebull [[email protected]] and get some pics of his work, and get in line behind all us other guys who have sent their boxes to him.
Best of luck to ya, and the offer to buy the 57 stands. Always wanted one of those for some weird reason.

WEIRD? WEIRD? Heck no, that ain't weird. Thats good thinkin. I found a 4" M57, no dash and bought it and love it. My wife sez I buy and sell the guns within several months but I told her this one is a keeper and it is. I shoot mainly 41 special in it and carry it while hunting and hiking.

Can't go wrong there.

I would take the grips off and try cleaning the metal parts with acetone or mineral spirits. This should strip off the dried oil and Flock material with out harming the metal finish. The grips would depend on whether the finish was damaged or not. If the finish is not softened and damaged I would probably try a piece of cheesecloth dampened with lemon oil. Gently rub an area to see if this loosens the material stuck to the finish. Someone else may know a better way to clean the wood. If the finish is really damaged than stripping and re-finishing would be the way to go. JHMO

I once bought a revolver with the same problem - sprayed it heavily with WD-40, came right off.

Talking

It's not hard to get the crud off using either of the methods mentioned above and +1 on sending the presentation case liners to Joe for a redo.

Here's one he did for me

Thanks for the info!

Joe does amazing work.

I'm too sentimental to ever sell any of grandpa's guns. Sorry Arman.
