Found a 19-3 BUT?
I looked at a 19-3 6" barrel ser. #K91823. The gun finish looks like new. Now here are the problems. It has mis-fitting big wood grips and someone engraved their SS# on the frame under the cylinder. I can buy new grips but should they be medallion style? How would I remove the engraved numbers from the frame. Would this make the gun worthless to a collector? I intend to use it as a range gun and fire 38 spl ammo. What does wise forum members think? Priced at $400

For 400 or a little more, you should be able to find a clean,non-defaced gun.
I never worry about grip issues, easy to address with a K frame-but I wouldn't touch a gun with a number scratched on it-it's there to stay.No one else would either, unless it was substantially cheaper-it has zero collector appeal.Keep looking-plenty of good guns for shooting 38 specials out there.Examples are: Model 14,15,19,66,67,27,28,586,686.

The serial number quoted is too early for a 19-3; it probably is missing a number before the K or after the 3. or is a parts gun. Agree the stocks can be easily changed to Targets, medallion, football cutout.
Two options on the engraved SSN - if it is lightly etched, it may be possible to remove without too much finish damage. If not and the gun will be a shooter, ask for a lower price.

Offer $300. You can always go up. Someone put N frame grips on it probably. If they are "football targets" you can sell them for $100 and have a nice shooter for less than $250. And bring it to Lakeland in April so we all can see it. Joe

I agree with the other commentators. I would not want a gun with someones ssan on it. I might consider some markings on the grip under the frame if lets say it was a police department marking or had the officers badge number but otherwise its more or less defaced but it still makes for a good shooting gun.....bad guys grind out the serial number but a light coating of acid can bring the number back up......you have to grind really deep to eradicate the number and that kinda ruins the finish.

I turned down what I thought was a superb Model 65, with a 3" barrel, for that very reason.
