Sometime in the early 1980s some friends and I ordered 57 28-2s - 4" that were marked NYSP (New York State Police). They were unusual in they have wide target triggers and hammers and red insert front sights and white outlined rear. I still have mine - it's in perfect condition with a serial number of N569xxx. Does anyone know about when it was made and what the value might be. I just signed up on the forum so if this topic has been covered I apologize in advance. Danny

That gun was manufactured in 1979.

Configured as it is I couldn't give you a proper appraisal. It sounds very nice and quite desirable with the non standard offering of target hammer, trigger, red ramp, white outline. The provenance of the New York State Police issue steps it up another notch.
Someone else will have to step in for a guesstimate on what that package will bring.

I purchased one last year for $435.00 and it is in decent shape. I would think anywhere between 400 and 500+ depending on gun values in your area, etc. Welcome to the forum - Joe

Puzzling that it would have been shipped in '79 and then sold off as surplus in the early '80s. Maybe the NYSP was in the process of expanding the force and had to arm new recruits with the standard duty weapon even if they knew they were going to "upgrade" to something else in a few years(?)

(I put "upgrade" in quotes as I doubt that what they replaced the might M28 with was actually better. )

What they were planning on "upgrading" to, was the N-frame model 520 but then went with the new L-frame SS model 681 in 1981. Joe

Thanks for the replies. The story we heard at the time was that were reequiping with autos. I would have thought that was a little early. This was about 1981. I didn't mention that they all came with the duty holsters. Danny

I bought mine from a fellow officer in 1992 for $200. He had bought it from another officer who had moved from NY in the mid 1980's and apparently had purchased the gun when he left the force. Mine has seen a lot of use but no real abuse. It is a working gun. I've had to change the main spring and I had it refinished but it is a great woods gun. Mine certainly has lost most of its collector value, if it ever had any. It's not going anywhere, so I'm not concerned about that.
