Default April '64 - Model 57s

These early Model 57s were both shipped in April 1964, the first month of regular production of the .41 Magnum!

The 6" gun #237360 shipped April 1st (Happy Birthday) in it's "Velour" lined case.

The much younger 4" Model #237391 was shipped to Boston. also in it's birthday suit of velour, April 28th, '64.

Very nice .41 Magnums. The old velour-lined cases certainly were a step up from the ones used for the 44s. Made quite a handsome combination.

I have a 64 6" and would love to one day buy a 64 4" shooter...

There is one more 64 6" that is in a shop right now being "reduced" to 5"....but it will never look like Doc's original 5"....

Nice guns...

Bob

Default I guess that some of us have to just be happy.

With our pedestrian grade guns. Although I will say that my blue 57 is an S series gun with the best blueing job that I have ever encountered on a pistol.

Yup, for some reason they stopped short about .024" when they bored the barrel!

Not only did they stop short on boring the barrel, they ran out of those blue flocked lining for the presentation cases and had to cut up an old Motel 6 blue velour bed spread in order to line the boxes! Innovation! Innovation...What were they thinking anyway?

Thanks for bringing up this old thread. I have #S238930 shipped April 20, 1964. It is a 6" in its velvet lined case. When I got it I thought it had custom stocks and a "Bubba" lined case, but later learned about "Coke" stocks and the special lined cases that were only used on these first 57s. Great memories!
P.S. Hopefully you have obtained the correct SATs for yours since 2010.
Mike

MODEL 57 is best kept secret in S&W inventory. It took me 41 years of collecting S&W revolvers to buy one and understand the genius of Mr. Kelton.

The thing I like most about the velour cases is the impression the cokes leave in it.

Very nice set of .41s
The 57s and 29s are a class act through to the end of the P&R era. Not knocking the post 1982 guns. But the earlier stuff is nicer. The wider checkering pattern and the “softer” finish on the coke bottle grips really look handcrafted. I have a factory re nickeled 29 from 1965. Shame that it’s not original but it was te done at the factory and you would’nt know it without seeing the re work stamp. This one has the original coke bottle grips and pinned on front sight base. The pinned sight base is another nice touch. After 1970 this went away on both the 29 and 57.
I reload for almost every caliber I have and always have room for another another one. So if I ever luck into a nice 57 especially an early one I will jump on it.
