Value/Price Check: Model 28 Shooter
I have been looking for a Model 28 to use as a shooter. I found a 28-2, 4" barrel, manufactured in 1969, former LEO gun. Timing and lock-up OK, good bore, quite a bit of holster wear with only about 70% finish remaining, agency name removed from frame. They are looking for $380 OTD. What do you think?

You are looking for a 28 to use as a shooter. This sorta sounds like a shooter. I have seen several average 28's at gun shows in the 550 range. The price on 28's is going up. Is this the gun you want? If so low ball them and either hunker or dicker to get the best price. If you don't want it keep looking but save up more cash.

I think that's a decent price for a Model 28 in the condition you describe. I never see them for less than $400 around here.

If the timing and lockup are OK then that's a decent price for a shooter but the 30% bluing loss is sort of excessive so if you can live with the looks then buy it.
It's hard to find a model 28 for less

That price is right on. I picked a 28-2 in almost the same shape for $375+Tax. Go for it.

The starting OTD price was $430, they came to $380, and I'm kinda hunkered at $340. At this point they've made no offer to split the difference, guess we'll see. Sounds like maybe the $380 is not too far off the mark. My only real hang up is the rough spot where the former agency name was removed from the frame. Guess I could smooth it out a little bit...

You're at the point where a couple of 20s stand between you owning
the gun or not. I'm not a believer in overpaying for anything but if you
want the gun and buy it you're not going to regret those two 20s ten
or fifteen years from now but if you let it get away for two 20s you
regret that for a long long time.

In SW Ohio that gun would not bring $300.00. Especially with the removed markings. How do you know it wasn't someones SS number removed? I've seen that several times. On edit I see this is an old thread. Don't know why it was brought back.

2010 post?
What where the production numbers on the m28 no dash with 6" barrel?
The 357 magnum revolver and 44 magnum revolvers have a special place in my heart. The 41 magnum is growing on me.
