Default need help ASAP....model 57 41 mag - deal or no deal?

I have the opportunity to buy a model 57 no dash 8 3/8. The gun is 98%+. Its also in a presentation case which my dealer says is not right for the gun. Theres no velvet in it he says. Its also missing the tools but has the paperwork. The gun also sports S&W combat grips with medallions. I don't know if it has an S prefix or if its 4 screw or not. I can get this gun with its case for $560 OTD, deal or no deal? I want to get original grips and if the case is wrong, I want to get the case for it. Please post with your answer and why. Thanks

"DEAL" 41 mag. are hot right now and I think the price is good. You see some K frame guns going for that much and more. Don

I think $560 OTD is a good price on almost any N frame in that shape. I dont think it is a real popular configuration, but if that is something that you like it is probably a bargain.
Model 57's were no dashes for years. The gun could be an S prefix gun, but would not be a 4 screw as this model didnt come out until 1964. I also believe that only the first few years of the 57 came with a velvet lined cased and the later ones were flocked. You can sell the combat grips for more than what you'll have to pay for the correct target grips.

Yes, buy it -- good price. I paid $750 last year for a long-tube 57 in similar condition but without a box. That was a California price, but even if you take out the west coast premium you would still be above the asking price you are looking at.

Deal.

I purchased one about 6 months ago for $525 without a box. I would think the one you are looking at it a fair deal.

I looked at the gun.....and its drilled and tapped on top? Is that correct for a model 57? I left it there and told the guy I would get back to him tomorrow.

Buy it, if money is not an issue, support the economy. I personally would not want a barrel that long but if you are a hunter it's great
Just a quick question, once you have it, what are you gonna do with it, too big to carry, too small for Bear, not correct box or other stuff, are you gonna hunt with it ?

Any barrel longer than 4" is trouble to carry on your belt if you must drive or sit . But when you get down to business , that 8 3/8 will put rounds on target like a little rifle . If you are going to pack it , go first class IMHO , just like Clint's shoulder rig .

Model 57 should not be drilled and tapped - that would be a deal breaker for {me}

Default the gun is just not right...

After some consideration, I have decided not to buy the gun. While I liked P&R'd guns like anyone else, there were some issues with this gun which told me it was not worth $560 to me:

* wrong box (it had a wood box with 2 latches and foam on the inside)
* no accessories other than the manual
* wrong grips (but they were S&W combat grips)
* no S prefix on SN
* MOST IMPORTANT - gun is a 57 no dash and was drilled and tapped. My SCSW 3rd ed states that drilling and tapping the frame started with model 57-4.

I was buying this gun originally as an investment. When I first heard about the gun, I was told it was P&R'd, near mint, with original presentation case and accessories. After looking at the gun, most of that was untrue. My FFL told me that he just repeated what the guy had told him.

i really like mine got it for $540 otd very happy i was looking for a 4" and this just happen to be in the case took it anyway. it's a 57 no dash just a little blueing off the end of the barrel. i'm happy with it. if i didn't have one i would have probably buy that one strip the box and grips and resale to someone that just wanted a 41 mag. Just to clarify, the gun was tapped on the top strap under the rear sight mount. From my research, this is not correct for a 57 no dash.

I think you did right by walking. With the gun drilled and tapped, and it being a long barrel, makes it not worth the cash he was asking. There are other .41 mags out there and I know you'll find a better one. David

How many holes are there in the topstrap?

A few years ago there was a M57 8 3/8" blue on AuctionArms with a Leupold scopebase and Bushnell trophy 2-6 power scope. No one bid on it and I ended up with it for less than $450.00 delivered. Since the scope and mounts were worth $150.00 I didn't think $300 for a P&R 57 shooter that was otherwise mint too bad.

When I got the gun I pulled off the base just to clean and reassemble everything properly with LocTite as I planned to shoot the gun with the scope...and was surprised to find whoever did the D&T didn't punch the holes all the way through the topstrap...so when the iron sights are in place there is just the one factory screw hole for the rear sight tang screw.

The gun has been shot with nothing but full loads and no problem with the mount loosening up at all...

Bob
