627-0 question.
I recently picked up a 627-0 and was wondering, why the "-0" on this particular model when others don't have it? Just curious...

According to the SCS&W III, the original Model 627's were marked as 627 no dashes. 274 were built before the factory did an engineering change that included longer bolt stop notches. These were the Model 627-0. They made 4,998 of those. 4 years later, the N frame was changed to the rear sight body with the round front edge and the top strap, under the rear sight body, was drilled and tapped for a scope mount. That was the Model 627-1. My guess, and it is only that, is mebbe S&W already had planned the changes for the 627-1, and just wanted to mark the 627 and 627-0 differently to make servicing them and ordering parts simpler in the future.

Thanks. Any ballpark figure on what one of these in excellent condition is worth (no paperwork, generic S&W box, Hogue grip)? These are actually pretty tough to come by here in California. I picked this one up in a trade and thought I had to have it. But, now I'm not so sure...

I purchased a 627-0 some 15 years ago and it is one of the best shooting revolvers I own. With the non-fluted cylinder and full lug barrel, there is plenty of weight and that really dampens the recoil. In the years since I bought this one, I have seen one other one for sale, and that was 10 years ago.

Actually, one will show up every once in a while. I have picked up three, and have seen more for sale. In like new condition and without box and papers, I would say about $600-700. California may be more. It seems most folks want perfect condition, with box and papers. Shooters without the extras don't seem to sell as high. They are heavy, but shoot very good. All the ones I have seen have floating hands.
