In answer to your question about a list of serial numbers.
You need to obtain the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson
3rd edition.
It is the Bible of S&W from the "git-go" to the present.
If you provide the serial number with the last 2 or 3 digits X'd out, someone will look it up in SCSW and provide you with the closest dating info readily available for your gun.
That is about as close as anyone can come without you requesting a letter ($50) from S&W.
The fact that your S&W is a 10-8 tells me it was manufactured later than 1977 for a start.
